The Adventures ...... unfolded.... part one ...

... the mini was packed to the roof with dog food.... two large dogs... and a couple of small totes filled with changes of clothes and a few comfort items... *air mattresses... and sleeping bags* .... and two guys heading out for a relaxing time in the hollers of Kentucky.... *nodding*....

... one last check and I slipped into the fetal position for first leg of the trip... the five hour trip to Mount Dora... *nodding* ...

... all went smoothly... except for the four hour traffic jam only 50 miles from our first destination... which turned a 5 hour trip into ten lol ...

.... we spent the night loading the ATVs on the trailers... and helping the other guys pack what I thought was an extraordinary amount of luggage for a short two week trip... *nodding* ... maybe it was the available room they all had in their trucks.... or I needed a lot less stuff for comfort... lol

... we left for KY early the next day.... and got to Blackey KY in a short twelve hour drive.... hehe... most of us showed up the first night about 11:30 and unloaded the "luggage" ... while the other guys headed on to New York for their family reunion... and would return to the cabin on the 5th of July.... as planned ...

... well.... this cabin of theirs was nestled deep in the hills on forty acres of densely wooded land.... and on entering the "driveway" I noticed the outhouse sitting rather proudly on the side of the hill about 200 feet from the main cabin.... *apparently this little room was used before they had "running" water*...

.... it wasn't until we turned the on the pump for the well that we realised the mining that had been happening hundreds of feet below the cabin had somehow collapsed the water vein .... and this "comfort" ... *running water* ... would not be a part of this particular adventure... hehe... and that outhouse was looking rather inviting... *nodding* ...

... did I mention mining? ...

... it seems that this quiet little adventure included coal mining which has been going on for hundreds of years ... lol.... and with the development of dynamite... well... you guessed it... every once in a while there was a low rumbling explosion coming from deep under ground.... and a vibration like a small earthquake... lol

... awwwww.... the peaceful tranquility of it all... *nodding* ...

... I had such a great time though... exploring all the hidden coal veins scattered throughout the hills... mostly hand dug caves from years gone by... if only they could speak... the stories they would tell...

... I had flashes of song "The coal miners daughter" ... and if you can imagine the sounds coming from the local radio... the Kentucky drawl... and sounds in the distance of banjos and wailing of "Big John" ... and other tales from the mines....

... there is plenty of history here though... with stories told of days when alcohol was made in stills ... hidden in them thar hills... *this is a "dry" county* ... and even some of the old cars that may have been used to transport the "liquid gold" lay where they landed ... scattered on the hillsides ... laying halfway down the sides of the "roads" they once traveled... becoming part of the forest... with trees simply growing through them....

... I can't tell you how many times I thought about the local families that have lived in these wooded lands since the early days... and how life must have been for them ... even thinking that "The Dukes of Hazard" was written about these folks... lol ... in fact I even took a 20 minute trip to Hazard... and it's just the way I imagined it... modernized a bit more now though...

... well we put about 500 miles on the ATVs riding some old trails... and making a few new ones... stopping very once in awhile and taking a refreshing dip and catching crawdads in the streams that flow all year round... brought back many memories from my years living in the Rockies ... as usual I had my flask of rum to wash the road dust from my throat... *nodding* ... and I learned a whole new way to express myself.... hillbilly style... lol

... to be continued ....
