I was at a party a few months ago, and I made a remark about how fetzels annoyed me. Nobody knew what the heck I was talking about. These are the confetti sized things that lay around on your carpet when you haven't vaccuumed recently. Socks are a particular offender. Some fetzels always fall on the floor when I take my socks off.
Anyway, I traced the lineage of this word, not surprisingly, to my German grandma.
My Dad once has this same communications conundrum when talking to a co-worker of Polish descent. It turns out he knew them as "schnibbles". And my mom, of english and irish heritage, knows them as "scraps."
