Goal Setting 101

Do you know the difference between a goal and a dream? A goal is a dream with a time limit on it. For instance, if you say “I want a new car.” That is a dream. If you were to say, “I want a new car by the end of the year.” That would be a goal, because you set a time limit as to when you wanted it.

I set a goal to get in shape for summer. I had more specifics. For instance, I wanted to lose weight, gain muscle and have my body fat percentage around 10%. My deadline was the end of July. Although, I missed most of my goals, I have made some gains. I’ve gained muscle mass, I’ve lost some weight (I am fitting into my skinny pants) and I believe I’ve lost some body fat percentage, but I don’t know how much.

The reason I missed my goal was because I failed to do what I said I would to 1 of these 4 questions:

What do you want?
When do you want it?
What are you willing to do for it?
What are you willing to give up, to get it?

I’ve already answered the first two questions above. The answer to the third question is to lift weights, do cardio and eat right. I was doing that too. However, it’s the last one that got me. I said I would give up drinking Mt. Dew. I don’t drink coffee and that’s my source of caffeine. The bad part is that Mt. Dew is chalk full of sugar. This is not what you want to be eating while trying to get in shape. That’s why I failed to reach my goal.

I am resetting my goal for 3 months from today. My goal is still the same, but I need to make sure I follow through with the fourth question. If I can do that, then I know I will reach my goal. I will post another picture of me at that time and hopefully you will all see a dramatic difference in my appearance. I'm asking you all to hold me accountable. Wish me luck and I’ll keep you posted.

I didn't know you don't drink coffee either! Diet Coke is my Caffeine of choice.

Out with the soft drink and in with the water, it will make a huge difference but you know that already.

You're exactly right with the bit about the water. That's what's necessary.

My caffine of choice is Diet or Regular Dr. Pepper. I to must give it up to obtain my goal. Do you think you could help me.

Have you answered the 4 questions I posed? If you have, then I recommend getting a book called "Body-for-Life" by Bill Phillips. That will give you all the info you need to get started. If you have specific questions I am more than willing to answer them.

I'm with you...I Love Mt. Dew! It's a hard thing to give up. I can't drink diet soda as it gives me migraines and I try to avoid those at all costs. Maybe you could start there? I wish you luck!!

I can't stand diet drinks myself. The after taste is what gets me. I need to stick with water.

We don't even have Mt.Dew here!

So, I have to wait 3 months for more pics....?!

No Mt. Dew? You don't know what you're missing. But if you did have it there, you would probably be as out of shape as I am.

Those pics were a secret between us. Thanks! Maybe if you beg I'll take some more, but it's going to have to be good. However, another solution could be if you show me yours I'll show you mine!
