Nature of romantic relationships

Because of personal experience, observation of what other experiences and discussions about the topic with close ones, I long ago concluded that there are two kinds of romantic relationships: relationships of passion and relationships of identity.

While these are two very extreme cases, I find that most relationships have at least a slightly greater tendency toward one end of the spectrum.

Obviously, both types have strenghts and weaknesses (and the weaknesses of one tend to be the strenghts of the other).

The passionate relationship tend to be shorter as it depends on the climax of the passion between two people (which tends to cool at least a bit for most people). It can also change into deep resentment if the two persons are strongly incompatible and have different values.

The relationship strongly geared toward identity tend to be longer lived, but is not without problems either. For one, it is strongly dependent on two people being similar at a core level and can break over time if life takes them through different paths. Also, passion can be lacking and it often requires extra effort to cultivate it.

Also, it would make sense that someone who prefers deeply passionate relationships would tend to form such a relationship on short notice while someone who prefers relationships of identity would take more time as he/she would have to figure out how compatible the other person is with him/her.

I was wondering if anyones feel they have something to add to this...

I think I'm more of a passionate relationship type. I tend to embark quickly on a high emotional relationship to sometimes find out later that it wasn't meant to be as we have too many things that seperate us, different values, views on life, nothing in common.. etc...

From what I know about you, I would place you in the identity category. Am I wrong?
