Alcoholic - vs - Heavy Drinker

Someone who replied to my lost post classified himself as a "heavy drinker". Most of what he said sounded like me. Is there really a difference between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker??

I guess it depends. Until I quit a couple months ago, I was surely a heavy drinker, in the sense I would drink not much else than alcoholic beverages every night after work, and most all afternoon and evenings on the weekends. I never seemed to get drunk. I just liked it. Would come home from work, have a couple or three scotches on the rocks, then wine with dinner, then more wine during the evening while I read or watched tv or surfed the internet. Weekend afternoons, would just start earlier, but go til bedtime. Again..not noticeably drunk, at least as far as I could tell. But an awful lot of booze, especially in comparison to the stuff I drank that was non-alcoholic. A month ago, I just quit. I have not experienced any particular withdrawal symptoms, and right now, just the smell of the stuff makes me a bit queasy. But I was for sure scared, when I decided to quit, that I would not be able to actually do it. The hardest part was finding suitable alternative beverages. I chose club soda (sometimes mixed with stuff like cranberry juice) and tons of Fresca. So was I (am an alcoholic? I have no idea. I am just glad to be done with it.
