A Horse Story (not really...)

I heard a story a long time ago that I am going to share with you.

There were two horses in a pasture, one brown and one grey. Normally, the farmer would bring a load of hay out to them every morning. One day, he stopped coming, so the horses ate the grass growing in the field. After a few days of no hay, they realized that something was wrong. It was late fall and the grass was not growing like it did in the spring. The grey horse said to his companion “Winter is coming soon. If we eat our fill now, there will be nothing to eat during the months ahead. If we eat less, we will soon be forces to eat the tough stalks that survive the winter, but we will make it through the winter, thinner to be sure, but alive at least. In spring we can again have our fill of fresh grass.”
The brown horse was puzzled and asked “But why not eat now and get a full belly, as I miss the farmer’s hay and I am dreadfully hungry”
The grey horse explained that there was not enough grass for both of them to eat their fill now and have enough to live on for the coming months. “If we do not go a little hungry, then we both will surely perish”
In the next few days, the grey horse ate less as he had advised, but noticed that the brown horse still ate his fill. The brown horse did not see why he had to go hungry as there was still grass in the field, no matter how many times his companion warned him.
The grey horse realizing that he would never convince the brown horse of the error of his ways, decided to stop eating totally, so that at least one of them would survive until spring’s growth.

I have known a few grey horses. I know way too many brown ones though.

Maggie, I bet that you are grey to the core, not just in spots.

Unfortunately...the brown horses never seem to deserve the nobility and unselfish ways of the grey horses...

kind thoughts,

It seems like the brown ones always find a grey one to take advantage of.
And grey ones are too self sacrificing to keep them from doing it.
