music to my ears

this weekend was an absolute blast-- and i have two medias to thank... first, a TV show on A&E called Rock School, and second, the movie Walk the Line.... watching rock school this week was very humbling. here, there are 9-17 year olds whaling away on zappa, black sabbath, and AC/DC tunes like it's nothing in philadelphia... the only problem is motivating these kids to do their best... the instructor pulled a quote from a zappa band member which really spoke to me. and i'm going to butcher it but here goes; "you have to remember that every person here at the show tonight could have just as easily stayed home and watched TV.... instead they chose to get up off their ass and come see YOU, to hear YOUR music, to be entertained by YOU, and they deserve a show." the show we played this weekend was phenomenal, and now i have a quote in the back of my head every time i take the stage. Walk the line spoke to me in different ways... before our show saturday night, my guitarist toasted to "the corruption of scotty"... and i could definitely see how much more 'rock n roll" i've become over the past year, and how much a musician's life is the same, no matter if you're a hall of fame legend, or just a pub musician... the degredation of present relationships, the building of new ones, the fun, the trouble, the heartache, the songwriting, the band dynamics, the egos, the humility, the excitement (and fear) of the stage... all of that is exactly the same. i saw myself (and some friends and lovers) multiple times during that movie. both of these shows were music to my ears... i am not alone, and i am just trying/struggling to entertain, to be heard, to be appreciated, to teach... and in return, am being entertained, humbled, taught, and loved, and am enjoying every part of this ride. to everyone who has said a kind word, thanks for all the support.
