Pushing Up Daisies

I will be out of town this weekend, spending time with the two greatest members of the male gender, and in my opinion, the two greatest people in the world. They are the light of my life and remind me every day why I am alive and what life is all about.

On the way home today, I decided to slide Scarecrow by Garth Brooks into my CD player. I immediately knew what track I would play--there was no other choice. From the first time I heard this song, I identified with every word of it. My mother died shortly after it came out and this also influenced what we put on her headstone...

Sept. 1, 1953-July 12, 2002
"Grandmother, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Christian, Friend"

and, I would like to add...One of my Angels

What will people remember you for? If you died today, what would your "dash in-between" represent? I hope mine would be "Mother, Daughter, Sister, Christian, Friend, Patriot, Lover." For right now, that is all that is important.

Pushing Up Daisies

"Sometimes I tell you
The way that I feel
I swear that
I'm going crazy
Keep telling myself
It ain't that big a deal
It's better than
Pushing up daisies
I felt the arrow from
Death's fatal quiver
Come so close
It actually grazed me
I bled the blood and
I felt the cold shiver
God only knows how
He saved me

[CHORUS*]

Sometimes my heart is
As true as a dove
Sometimes my heart
It betrays me
So I draw my sword for
To fight for my love
But without a whisper
She slays me

My mother died but
Somehow she keeps living
She'll never cease to amaze me
Now Dad turns his back
On each day that he's given
Because he'd rather be
Pushing up daisies

[REPEAT CHORUS*:]
There's two dates in time
That they'll carve
On your stone
And everyone knows
What they mean
What's more important is
The time that is known
In that little dash
There in between
That little dash
There in between"

So, what do you want on your tombstone?

And when our work is done,
Our course on Earth is run,
May it be said, "Well Done!
Be Thou at Peace."

And I want the dash to have earned it.
