Playing God

I was reading an article by a fellow who distinguishes evalutations from desires or wants. To put it roughly, he sets our notions of what is good or worthwhile against what we desire or crave. Sadly, the two sometimes diverge, as when, say, an addict values a productive life but inevitably gives into his cravings for some debilitating drug. This leads to a kind of depersonalization, because we are most centrally our evaluations, not our desires, which explains why the addict may not feel very good about himself.

Happily, however, the two can and often do coincide. But here's the deal. Consider sex. It's surely a desire. We like sex because it feels good (to put it mildly); that is, we desire it, just as we desire food and warmth. So given that it feels good, we want it. But do we value it apart from that?

Think of it this way: Suppose you are God and getting ready to create a universe. Do you include sex--not just reproduction but sex in all its concrete minutia? Is there value to sex apart from the pleasure that's involved?

I tend to think there is. For one thing, it promotes intimacy. Let's face it: the act itself is fairly ridiculous, what with all those funny sounds, facial expressions, and bodily responses. The willingness to share all that with another can help us be open more generally to our partners (can, but--sadly--need not).

What do you think? What would you do if you were the creator?

If I were Goddess of this universe: I would include Sex as a vital part of the Program. Aside from it being a desire, I think it is much more. It creates an atmosphere tranquility for me. The intamacy it promotes is unparalled. Hell, i've lived with a man for 25 years and have little intamacy, probably because the sex has been abysmally minimal. My lover on the other hand knows me through and through. I could never consider a universe without sex in full regalia. There, I've given my two cents...Goddess Rose

This is actually an interesting question. Whether you use God or evolution, humans are the only ones who fully enjoy sex. The human female is the only species to have a clitoris, which serves no purpose other than sexual pleasure. Let's face it, human childbirth is incredibly painful because humans have advanced brains. Therefore, if sex wasn't so pleasurable, no one would do it, as childbirth is so painful and even in this day and age, can be very dangerous.

So yeah. If I was the creator, I would make sex feel good. But only for intelligent people.

I have long believed that the *only* evidence there even is a Creator is that human beings have non-procreative sex and have the capacity to make music.
