Hump Day

I always have wednesdays off. And mondays. I enjoy my work schedule, I really do. I work four ten hour days. But, the hours, (1230-2300), aren't too conducive for a social life, as just about every person I know has a typical 8-5, M-F work week. I do have every other weekend off though, and that helps. But, to tell you the truth, I'm getting very tired of working weekends. I've been doing it for a long time, and, it's getting old. Fun things go on, events are planned, and I have to say, "well dang, I have to work." Ah well, c'est le vie...

So today, I am visiting my mom. She's in an ALF in Largo. Beautiful place. Spacious grounds, etc. Expensive as all get out. She was originally in the mainstream, but, after three weeks, it was determined she needed MORE care. She's now on the 4th floor - the Alzheimer's unit. Yea, my mom has Alzheimer's. Sigh. It was diagnosed less than two years ago, and she has progressed at a rate that is astounding. I've not ever seen it move so quickly. She still knows us, but, sometimes, even that is a bit foggy to her.

It breaks my heart. I miss my mother. I miss her sarcasm. Her quick wit. I miss calling her when I'm sick, just to say, "mom, I don't feel so well", and hearing her tell me to drink plenty of fluids and get rest. Damn, I miss that. Yes, she is still my mom, but, she's basically an empty shell of what she once was... and it hurts. A lot.

So, to those of you with parents that are still on this earth, don't forget to tell them you love them. Even if many miles separate you, let them know how much they mean to you. You never know when you may not ever get the chance again...

Wow. That was a touching blog!

My mother-in-law was diagnosed 3 years ago. It has not been an easy road.
