Drinking Makkioli

Makkioli is a Korean rice wine. It's slightly carbonated from the sugar content and it's taste is good. It looks like a latte in colour....

I first drank Makkioli when I was on a tour of Jeju do. I had 7 days to see all of the sights so a tour was a quick way of seeing the most distant sights. Unfortunately, there were no English tours that day so I had to jump in with the Koreans. Since I was the only foreigner, I stood out like a sore thumb. The other difficulty was that I know only two words in Korean so I missed a lot of the explanations of things.

The tour was rather boring with a time spent sampling the local herbal drink (supposedly a great cure-all but the price was double that of the local markets - even the Koreans can be suckered). The stop for lunch was great. Some of the Koreans spoke English and they all made me feel welcome. We had Bulgogi (Korean barbecue) and out came the Makkioli. Big bowls were served and it just tasted so good. I went back for more and had a great buzz going for the afternoon....

Whenever I saw it, I'd grab some and be on my way. The final time i drank it was when I was in Seoul where I went into a soju hut, ate pig intestines and chased it all down with this beverage. My all night train ride home to Jinhae was mellow and relaxing with the buzz still ringing.....

Wow! I have never heard of that stuff. It is funny how in other parts of the world other things are eaten or drunken?

I know how you feel about the tour being in another language then English because I had that when I first came to Belgium, nice to know that some of the Koreans tried to make you feel welcome.

Babel: the Koreans love to drink... They will turn almost anything into alcohol....

I spent 6 months in Korea and the Koreans were extremely hospitable....
