A surreal morning......At a gay bar. (No, I'm straight!)

So its like this...

One of my friends from work is a gay man. No big deal, he doesn't hit on me or anything. He's just gay.

We're friends mainly because back when I started working at my hospital, I had to take the bus home in the morning as I did not have a functioning car. He had to take the bus in the morning too, because he doesn't drive.

Recently, my aunt had a car wreck, so I lent her my car so she could get around. Back on the bus for me.

The other morning, my friend asked if I wanted to grab a drink on the way home. I said sure, why not?
Just because its morning for the rest of the world, it was evening time for us, and I could use a drink.

Well, even in Milwaukee, a town famouse for its drinking, there aren't a lot of bars open at 8am.
But as fate would have it, one of his bars was. I say his, because it is a gay bar.

Don't get me wrong, I've been to gay bars in the past. Just with a female companion, and usually at night, when the rest of the straight "tourists" are hitting the night spots. Let's face it, gay bars, and clubs throw the best parties. But this is all at night. Not the morning.

I was hesitant about going in once we got there. I was kind of worried about what sort of degenerates would be prowling around inside before 9am. But being the man without fear that I am...I went in.

Two guys and a bartender greeted us. My friend quickly started with the hellos and the hugs that seemed to me to be the customary greeting in such places. I sort of stood back and watched.

My friend quickly introduced me and made clear for all my sexual orientation. This was greeted by some laughter and fond welcomes from those who lurked within.

I found out one of the men at the bar was the owner. And the other was an early morning regular, because he too works the night shift. I have to say, at no time did I feel uneasy about my surroundings, and rather quickly I was pretty much doin' my normal bar thing. Sitting, drinking, and shooting the shit. We were there for a few hours, and before you knew it, the place was full up. But it happened so slowly, I barely noticed it. What's more, I was introduced to everyone that came in, and it was made clear for me that I was not gay, just hanging out.

Normally, in a crowded bar situation, I have a little difficulty because I find myself keeping an eye on the door, and another scanning the room for anyone that may be trouble.

I gotta say...I didn't do that there at all. Nobody in there posed any sort of threat, and everyone was very friendly. And not the fake "I'm hitting on you" friendly. The closest thing to a confronttion I witnessed was when a couple of the guys started getting a bit hissy with each other.

Aside from the word "bitch" flying back and forth, you couldn't even tell anyone was fighting.

Another strange thing.

I paid for maybe 3 drinks the entire time I was in there. Not because they were trying to liquor me up to test my sexuality...but everytime someone new came in, they bought a round for everyone.

I guess the main rule is, get there early.

Then there is this game called bar dice.

I'm not 100% on the rules of this game, but apparently I'm very good at it too. Kinda like a drunk version of Yhatzee.

Needless to say, before I realized it, it was already 7pm. And I was skunked beyond imagination.

To my suprise though, a few women came in.

"Fag Hag" is the term. And this was where I went evil.

See, they weren't introduced to me. So they didn't know I was a straight guy. What's more...the other guys in there didn't bother to tell these poor girls I was straight either, more to the point, I think they played up not knowing me. Something tells me, they wanted me to bang one of the girls.

Long story short...One of the females ended up thinking she "fixed" me in the ladies room.

And yes, I'm sure she was really a female.

So anyway...the whole point of this post is to say...

The most fun I've had in a bar in a very long time ended up being in a gay bar.

And I'm comfortable with that.

Back in the 60's & 70's there were four gay clubs in East Hampton and, although I'm straight too, I would occasionally go to them with my gay friends... They always had the best music and most fun.
When I lived in Houston, many of my customers were gay-owned bars & restaurants... Same thing... They always had the most fun and least "drama".
I have a bright pink pickup truck (GM calls it "Raspberry) I bought because it was a "loaded" demo and they gave me a super deal on it... All my gay friends wanted me to drive it in their Gay Pride Parade every year. They rarely hit on me and always knew how to party!

Pleasing women in unbelievable ways for 45 years...
You could be next...

I laughed my ass off at this post. Loved the ending and also loved the whistling in the dark during the rest of it.

That's quite a story. Thanks for sharing.

I'm straight but have a couple of close male friends who are gay. I went with them and my wife one year to Pridefest at the Summerfest grounds (three members of this foursome REALLY wanted to hear the ABBA cover band that was playing there -- guess who really didn't give a rip?)

Like you, I felt safe and comfortable. It was even a little ego boost, because I NEVER get hit on by women, but as I was standing in line for beer I did get chatted up. (Okay, I'm vain and shallow).

But the most interesting difference between the Summerfest grounds for that night and any other that year was in the men's room. Nothing illicit going on, but I NEVER heard so much chatter! A bunch of straight guys would never be so free to talk (and talk and talk) as they stand at the urinals with their willies hanging out.

It was quite a contrast! (And the ABBA cover band was more fun than I expected).
