More Fun than a Barrel of Money!

I’ve mentioned my pops before... a loving, compassionate father, funny as hell guy, and a larger than life cop. I’ll from here on out call him by a version of the name my friends called him - “Big Daddy Kane”, “Kane” substituting for his real last name.

Well, Big Daddy Kane worked undercover narcotics in NYC for about five years shortly after I graduated high school. His division went after the biggest drug guys in the city. It changed him, and in a very good way. We didn’t get along so well once I got into high school. Example: I pierced my ear in grade nine, and BDK threw a fit... threatened to rip it out if I didn’t take it off RIGHT NOW!

Shortly after starting the job in the City, he pierced his ears; now he was stealing my earrings AND all my leather jackets. We got along better after that than we had since I’m a kid.

So, one late November he was called in to help another team on a bust; they usually did that so no one got hurt. They bust in, take everyone down cleanly, i.e., get the bad guys cuffed on the floor without a shot, and start searching for the dope. They find a 55 gallon drum behind a fake wall in a closet and think they got it. When they opened it they found... no dope, but US$14,000,000.00!

They keep looking for the dope, but it isn’t there. Meanwhile, they had a captain there, so they could take the dough down and log it.

Under questioning, the baddies tell them exactly where the dough was going - some drug lord in Columbia. My dad and some guys asked if they could have the barrel from evidence, the evidence guys are perplexed, but let them take it.

Now they go around taking everyone’s phone books, and later they do a group Christmas shot of themselves in their balaclava with Santa hats on.

So they stuff the drum with the phone books, put the photo on top along with a Christmas card saying, “Merry Christmas Motherfucker, thanks for the gift!”; then they FedExed the whole sodding thing to this druglord’s front door!

Weren't they the bit worried about this drug lord having them hunted down and killed? And didn't they get in trouble with evidence for taking the barrel?

Rowan_Taltos - Thank you.

Stasi - I never questioned BDK on these matters. I know there was very little risk of retaliation, their organization was very secretive. As far as evidence, good point. I assume that since they had the dough, it was enough to prosecute, or maybe they got one like it.

My favorite part when BDK told the story, was the FedEx part. I asked him how they got it there, and he looks at me like I'm an asshole and just tells me, "FedEx!"

Great story. I always figured cops had to have a sense of humor to cope with the job. Reminds me of alot of Christmas around here.
