U2 - New Year's Day

...like you didn't see that one coming. lol

New Year's is a time of reflection, yet also of looking ahead. We look like the two-headed god Janus for a while, who could see the past and the future at the same time, if my mythology isn't too rusty.

Looking back on this past year, it staggers me to see how much has changed. At this time last year, I was living and working in the Lehigh Valley, in a relationship that was struggling, but not yet lost. We rang in the New Year by not talking to each other, which is always a bad sign. I don't even remember what we fought over, but I do remember having the awful feeling that we weren't going to make it through the year. And so it came to pass, as we split up in April. I'm not going to go into the details here, as I've been through them several times with my friends.

Now, I start 2006 back where I was years ago, in many ways. I'm back at home again, and have transferred my job back to Berks as well. I spend most of my free time in front of the computer, and I don't eat or sleep right. All this just like before I met my girlfriend. Of course, some things are different - I'm making more money now, I have a few gray hairs and a better car, and many new online friends. I cherish all those things except the gray hairs. lol

I was also on this site way back in '01, under a different name. I wasn't here very long, as I had met my g/f not too long after joining. Once I left her and got situated back in Reading again, I came back, looking to enjoy being single for a while and to see what's out there. I've gotten mixed results, but overall I'd say I've done pretty well. I've met quite a few women from here, most of them as friends, some as more than just ordinary friends. I've also had my share of disappointments - women who have ignored me, blown me off, stood me up, what have you. In other words, it's a microcosm of real life in some ways. But overall, I'm glad I came back, and there's very little I would have done differently here. The only thing that comes to mind is a falling-out I had with a woman back in the summer - that definitely didn't turn out the way it was supposed to...

As for what lies ahead for me...well, who the hell knows? I'm sure I'll be here for a while longer, as I've met many good people here, and hope to meet many more. Maybe I'll find that someone special this year. Who knows, maybe she's already on my friends list...Then again, maybe it'll just be a year for me to relax and have some fun. That's the beautiful thing about the future - it hasn't been written yet. You get to write your own.

As for the immediate future, I think a shower is in order...
