Innocence Lost

They sat as close as two beating hearts would allow at this point. Her eyes swelled with tears yet she held it back like a dam waiting to burst... as the first tear started to roll down her cheek.. He had said all he could say at this point. The mending, the recovering, and the reestablishment of what she went through was still the internal battle to be delt with. He saw her thoughts through her eyes. He could see the blame and the regret exposing itself as the first to claim her wounded soul. The word "innocence" was discovered for a reason. The word is meant to be taken from us. The same goes for words like love, happiness and dignity. We must understand them and experience them before we ever truly realize what it's like to take a breath in life without them. The one, and most important difference, is that unlike love and happiness, innocence is one thing you can never get back. And it truly takes sadness to understand and appreciate happiness.

"Look in my eyes." She said. "I'm a fucking mess."

He looked long and sympathetic before he attempted to utter a sound. Deep in thought, he contemplated all that life gives us. He blended that around in his mind with all that life can take away. He realized that perhaps she had never known true love, as he wondered....did he. She had never felt that unconditional agreement that many of us tend to take for granted. It was that lack of love that pushed her to make something that was nothing........ work. Letting go or not trying meant failure to her. Letting go meant doing something to someone else... what had perhaps,... been done to her. There was a beauty in it. Pure innocense. A zest for life to persue and not give up but to hold on. A beauty exposed that far surpassed her sparkling but now swollen brown eyes. He tried to compare it to something that registered deep in his mind. Wanting more than anything to come up with some grand metaphor to make her feel better and allow him more time to sit in the silence with her. But he remained silent, there were no words at this time. It was spoken through their eyes.

She waited for him to speak. He was her truth. He was all the things that she was too afraid to say out loud. He knew he couldn't stop her from blaming. His hands were tied, and for the first time in his life, he wished to have no tongue so he would have an excuse to remain silent. Her pain passed through him like a shiver. Then, surprising himself and all who look down upon him, he took her hand in his. He stood up and brought her close to him. His left hand slid to her waist and her hand took his right. Within the insanity of loss they heard music in the silence. His love for her would never change. No matter how many more times this same occasion would replay in their minds. Without words he soothed her. Without words he brought her back to the place where he had first fallen in love with her.

He closed his eyes and felt her head rest upon his shoulder. Unspoken love. He wanted her to know it, but didn't have the strength to tell her in a different way than he already had hundreds of times. It's in the moments where words are few and emotion is plenty that messages are delivered. There is no one he would rather dance to.... without music. There is no heart he would rather mend without asking for anything in return. She will learn lessons from loss. Lessons that we cannot learn from another's advice. He is reminded of the one he continues to learn from her. We should never give up on the dreams that our hearts remind us of every day. Love is selfless. Although best felt together, for her.... he will walk the silent road alone. Life is lessons, and the best and the worst always seem to be learned from love.

Thank you for the kind words. I try and hold on to what innocence is left, as it makes the heart so genuine. But sometimes others see the innocence that comes with trust and take advantage of it. In many ways, it is not truly lost, but the next time it won't be as exposed.

A good way to get absolutely nowhere is to try to move in several directions at once.
