The Chill

I never used to feel the cold,
scorned socks and gloves,
as needless frippery,
walked with my coat open
in the dead of winter dark,
but one day
I felt the cold slip past my skin,
and settle bone deep
till it seemed my fingers
would never feel warm again.
And I wonder now
if I foolishly spent
my life's ration of warm
in a silly pursuit of snowflakes on my tongue,
or relishing cold not yet raw.
Will I spend my days
searching for a candle
to make me feel
the lifeblood I know was once mine?
