What Dreams May Come

As summer comes roaring into the Sonoran Desert with all the subtlety of a flamethrower I seek refuge in memories and thoughts of my favorite time of year: Autumn. Not Autumn as it happens here in the desert - we don't really have one. We have only two seasons: Hot and Not-Hot. That may be one of the appeals of the place, but there is, to some degree, a sense of loss in it as well.

If Winter is a period of rest, Spring a time of renewal, and Summer the time of fullfilment, then Autumn is the season of reflection and carries with it a certain melancholy (to which us artistic types are, perhaps regrettably, particularly susceptible). Something of the order of life is missing without those seasons, especially when one grew up with them as I did in North Dakota and Illinois.

So when the heat and the sun become oppressive I wander back in my mind to an October evening, the sunset painting the sky with the last bands of forgotten turquoise. Oaks and Maples and Poplars and Cottonwoods line the yards where warm lights glow behind drawn curtains of homes built in the first half of the last century (unlike Tucson, whose architecture seems modeled after a Taco Bell). What lives and loves and dramas, laughter and tears go on beyond those curtains? I don't know...I only know that I am alone. A brisk breeze blows from the north (it always seems to come from the north) and slips chilly fingers inside my jacket and teases the fallen leaves into scuttling activity like the dried husks of insects suddenly reanimated to scurry across the sidewalks in fading reds and yellows giving way to the crinkling brown of forgotten and fading lives.

The trees reach skeletal fingers into the darkening night sky, where stars appear in the magic distance, twinkling cold and clear as they do in northern climes. Implausably distant nuclear suns whose immense heat fails to cross the void, leaving only cold winking light to fill the deepening dark.

Streetlights flicker to life, throwing pools of light like a violation into the intersections where more leaves scamper onto the stage for their brief moment in the spotlight. The melancholy sets in under the unblinking gaze of the universe...

"I had LOVE once!" I tell the distant lights as the leaves swirl through the dark, feeling the loneliness press down upon me with the weight of galaxies.

"We know," the voiceless multitude answers in the heart of the darkness. "We dreamed it for you."

"But it's OVER!!! It's gone!" I accuse.

"Dreams end," comes the voiceless reply.

"But WHY?"

"So you can dream again."

I don't know if you know him or if you think he is tripe...but your words made me recall Rod McKuen,,,,

The Beautiful Strangers

Ah the beautiful strangers
who held me for a night
and fell down in the darkness
on pillows soft and white.

Ah the beautiful strangers
all in the afternoon
who praised my flat little stomach
and came back to my room.

Ah the beautiful strangers
who spoiled me for a time
and taught me neon's just as nice
as afternoon sunshine.

I think I'm going to like you. Our Politics are quite the same but KJ, my latest roomie and mentor on AdultFriendFinder has advised me to shut da fuk up about Politics as we are trying to start a private party/travel group. I would love to launch an attack on current policies especially after hearing that so called patriotic speech yesterday, never mentioning that The contractors there, especially Halliburton or however you spell it, haven't been replaced, thinking of being replaced, or was their work ever open to the bid system, but I believe if we withdrew them, we would withdraw our fellow Democrats and a few good Repuglicans who are protecting them!..okay okay I'll shut up! woosh I ...get so angry!!
