Gotta Hand it to the French

Boy they do those kids know how to organize a riot. They had something like a million people all rioting at the same time. I can't wait until they pull out that guillotine. I wonder if they'll sell tickets this time?

So, they're rioting because their government is trying to save their economy...Here's the thing, they're trying to pass a law that makes it possible to fire kids within the first two years of employment (apparently you can get a job and never get fired in France unless the employer takes you to court). They have something on the order of 22% of their youth unemployed. This is primarily because no company is going to just hire somebody they have to keep for life.

I think the real reason they're rioting is because if that law passed, young people in France might actually have to work because they could get actually get hired. And, since they're unemployed already, they have plenty of time to riot.

I'd love to riot, but I don't have time. I gotta work for a living since my government doesn't pay for every little goddamned thing unless I'm an illegal immigrant, which I'm not.

It never ceases to amuse me when France does something utterly ridiculous since they spend so much time telling us here in America how things should be done and how we're assholes etc. ad nauseum. What was the last breakthrough to come from France other than new versions of their whine/wine?

You know the last time we had a significant sized riot in the US? It was in protest over a Nazi rally. It took place in one small down and only covered a few blocks. We don't even have riots over this illegal immigration bill that may or may not go through.

Speaking of which, here's my take on that. Seal the border except for the points at which you're allowed to cross. Do nothing regarding the existing illegals because it's a waste of money to deport them or try and fine businesses who employ them. They don't get amnesty. They do not get any kind of round up for citizenship. If they want to be citizens, they go through the process like everybody else. Until then, they're subject to being deported if they get caught here. End of story.

I don't really like borders in this global world myself. I believe we've reached a point where technology eliminates the need for them. But, given the fact that the rest of the world does not currently share that belief, I'd rather regulate the way in which the rest of the world comes gets here.

Personally, I think we should be figuring out how to make the countries from which these people are fleeing good enough such that people wouldn't need to escape en masse to the US.

Nah: I said, "the last significant sized riot". Obviously Rodney King was one, but it was not the most recent one.

I disagree regarding closing the border. I do not think that the immigrants coming over in any way turn out to be middle class. They take the low paying jobs that nobody wants and then live off government supplements if they can get them. I also don't think closing the border to all except the designated choke points will damage the economy. If the corporations need labor, they'll allow more people in via those points.

Everyone knows the US government is owned by corporate interest. Einstein even saw that coming back in the 50s (wrote a really interesting paper on it he did.) And yeah, there's a big gap, but letting a lot of people who are already poor stream in and remain poor is not going to solve that problem.

Department of Peace? *chuckles* What, exactly, would it do? What would be its responsibilities? Are we really going to leave Peace in the hands of politicians and beauracrats?

Fly: Indeed

Kate: Of course you do. We expect you to be busier entertaining us with your Naked Katey dance.

Nah: Well as I said, I don't believe in borders either, but most people do and much of the world considers us a target.

As to the US Dept. of sounds like a liberal pipe-dream to me. That kind of organization sounds like a huge, huge money sucking bottomless pit. How do you measure their effectiveness? Why don't most of those tasks fall under the heading of current law enforcement, particularly the gang psychology one? Plus, to produce peace you need lots of small sized organizations working within local populations to get people to stop being dicks to one another not one big red-tape filled money pit trying to step on the toes of local law enforcement and judicial systems.
