Wandering around downtown...

I met a friend for lunch yesterday in Downtown Memphis, a place I rarely go anymore except to go to the Orpheum or Beale Street. We had a lot of fun, saw a movie, and got to walk around and see how far King Willie's "urban renewal" project is coming. There are trees being planted, there are tourists everywhere...

and yet there are still panhandlers on Linden and hookers at the Peabody. I was born and raised in Memphis, and I have an expatriate's sort of view on the subject. My family left Memphis in 1992,I live in Mississippi. Memphis's single largest problem, then and now, is its eroding tax base and a dearth of young twentysomethings and thirtysomethings willing to move into the city and set up housekeeping. There were rags on the sidewalk and panhandlers loitering outside FedEx Forum yesterday. It was uncomfortable, to put it nicely.

I had a great time with my friend, but I can't help but wonder... why does Memphis, or any big city, put up with this crap? Tourists don't visit places where they can't feel safe, and if they don't visit, they don't spend money.

On the more optimistic side, I seem to have avoided most of the junk-mail posts on the site... AdultFriendFinder is doing a MUCH better job at identifying the shills for other dating sites than they used to. It definitely pays to have a vanity e-mail account, though... just because the girl's picture is nice and she has a great profile doesn't mean a certain amount of caution is unwarranted.

I read this one profile earlier that I'm just itching to respond to (figuratively speaking) but I don't know what to say yet. I'm hoping genius will strike and I'll figure out what to write. (Of course, I'd be pissed off if I were the genius muse... After all, others are asking for the cure for cancer or proof that PI is a truly nonterminating, nonrepeating number. I'm asking for help getting laid. There's a bit of a disconnect, I think.)

Play safe.
