MYTHBUSTERS

Without a doubt one of my favorite programs on TV would have to be MythBusters, which screens here on SBS on Monday nights at 7.30 pm. For those of you who have never seen the show, its run by two goofy guys and their co-workers, and the aim of the show is to take all the web myths, old wives tales and the like and either prove, disprove or accept as plausible the stated myth.
One of my favourite myths that they took on in an early episode was The Ski Boat, where they took a sweep oar Olympic standard rowing eight crewed by a crew from Stanford University and tried to get them to be able to successfully tow a water skier upright. They actually managed to do it. I really got into this as I used to row at school and during summer rowing camps down on the Gippsland Lakes in January we used to often joke about doing something like that. What is really strange is that the way in which they went about it was exactly the way in which I had envisaged doing it all those years ago. Basically just getting rope and tying your way down from rigger to rigger [outriggers to support the rowlock the oar pivots and rotates in] and then combining that with the rope running down the other side of the boat, and joined to the rope towing the skier.
It wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but it was done and it just goes to show that some of my wild ideas are not so wild after-all.
I really enjoy the show because it is kind of a nerdy geeky science and explosions type show, but far better than the similar show from Britain, Brainiac.
The guys on Brainiac seem to have a bigger desire to blow things up as well as destroying caravans.

Either way I wouldn't say no to working on a program like MythBusters, looks like a lot of fun to me.

Oh, I loooove Adam and Jamie! I watch MYTHBUSTERS on the Discovery channel and am usually laughing my cute lil' butt off before the show has been on more than 5 minutes.

I'd love to work on that or a similar show, too. It appeals to the destructive little monster in me

An eight man rowing crew pulling a skier?! I'd like to see that one!

Princess remind me to never let you near anything that could be used to make explosives. If however you do get your hands on something explosive, then let me know so I can start running the other way.

Tiger it wasnt pretty but they did actually do it.
The only way I could see to improve on what they did would be to incorporate a shock absorber system in an attempt to smooth out the impulse load as the rowers hit the "catch" start to load on the power.
It was a real buzz to watch though.
