What is a friend?

What is friendship in it's original meaning? We use good friends and bad friends nowadays. Close friends and casual friends.

Do we use this term loosely like many today?
Is true friendship developed or stumbled upon?

A true friend makes it his busines to care for that someone.
He seeks to protect her (I'm using the opposite gender here), attend to her call of need, willing to bear within reasonable limits her outbursts, seeks continually to understand her character and even when he does not, will put up with her as he sees a friendship worth keeping.

A friend will pull out all stops to protect this relationship.
He is selfless, and is willing to go the second mile to be there for her.
A friend is someone who will give his time, energy and love to help the other grow.

The ultimate price of a friendship is to give one's life for that someone.

A true friend is hard to find.
Cherish your friend if you have one today.

There is another category of friends.
They dun last through out life. But they are there for a specific moment. A time when you need them. At different points in your life such friends come forth to help, to listen, to encourage.

Dun cling on to them. Just appreciate them for that moment in time.
And also remember them when one day you think you have no friends.
