I was scammed! (But, then ...)

On Sunday, I was at home and somebody knocked on my front door. I rarely get anybody knocking on that door. It was a young lady with a sob story. Her daughter was sick in the hospital and the lady needed money to get home. Her story had a touch of legitimacy to it and since it was Sunday and I was in a good mood, I gave her $10. She said she would come back later and repay me with $20. I totally didn't believe that part. Of course, she never came back. No big deal.

The next day, I'm getting gas in a place not in my own neighborhood and I see a familiar looking car. It's this lady getting something from the store! I walked up to her and asked "How's your daughter?" She stammered and just looked away. I wanted to start something but, she had a couple of seedy looking guys in the car and I knew to back away.

Oh well, it was only $10. I knew when I gave it to her, I would never see her again. But, I did see her again! What are the chances?

UPDATE: A week later, I found $10 in my front yard! Had she come back to repay me? Hmmm.

I am sorry this happened to you.
Be careful though opening doors to strangers, could have been worse. Good thing you were not hurt.

Encountered a similar situation about a month ago. Only the guy I loaned the money to did indeed come back and try to pay me back. I told him not to worry about it but thanks for at least keeping your word.

So I think either way you look at it, the chances of seeing them again let alone getting your money back is pretty slim to none.

I agree with gcao1, many home invasions start that way. Someone knocked on my door last night at about 8:30 PM. I had been dozing in front of the computer, so I was startled. By the time I looked out the peep hole, the person had just gotten to the bottom of my steps (I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment complex). I wasn't expecting any one, so I didn't open the door.

Please be more careful!

That was her guilty conscience getting back at her. Things always have a way of working themselves out!
