There are teething rings you can buy and put in the frig to get cold. That helps. Some moms use a carrot. Sometimes just rubbing their gums with a finger helps. There is also gel you can buy at the drugstore that is supposed to numb the gums. My son is 25, and I can't remember more than that.

I would take a damp washcloth and put it in the freezer to get it nice and cold for my son. He never liked teething rings, but loved to gum these cloths. Now, I never left him alone with one. He just chewed on it while I was holding him and I could keep an eye on him. Sometimes, he was just happy to chew on my finger. I also used Oragel for teething on him. Any drugstore will have that.
