Same Planet, Different Worlds

Had an interesting semi-existential conversation with a good friend today. I said, “When I look around me, I can’t imagine an all seeing, all powerful entity watching over us.” He replied, “That’s funny, because I look around me and I can’t imagine there isn’t an all seeing, all powerful entity watching over us.

He asked me if I believe in heaven. I said, “No” and then explained my ideas about death and that I specifically don’t believe there’s a white guy with a long beard and an abacus waiting to show me my new home for all eternity. But, I told him, “This thought really scares me. I mean, if there is no afterlife then I only have a small amount of time to really do something with my life ‒ maybe another 35 or 40 years. I better get cracking.” He said, “Funny, I do believe in heaven and an after life and that scares me because I only have a few years to do something worthy with my life.”

I guess we both better get cracking.
