Generally people shoot the messenger carrying bad news. I learned this fact in high school. I had a semi-friend who was mooning over a nice girl and he was making a total ass of himself. She had another boyfriend who was way cooler. She was nice about it but she was totally uninterested. In fact she confided in me that she was embarrassed by the attention from him and some of his fellow nerdy intellectuals.
So I made the big mistake of telling Stan that he was off base as she had a close boyfriend and was not really interested in other guys at this point. I did not say anything negative about him (although there was lots to say if I had wanted to!). Well was I surprised by his anger and hostility toward me! My quasi friend was now a quasi enemy!
I learned a valuable lesson. Don't tell people things they don't want to hear unless they are paying you for honest advice (I am a lawyer!) or you are forced to do so! No one ever got popular telling the truth! Respected, but not loved or popular.
