Leaving her by the river


I like the zen story about leaving the woman by the riverside.

It goes something like this, a zen master picked up a woman and carried her across the stream and then put her down and walked on. His disciples followed and down the road aways questioned the master for touching a woman which was forbidden to the monks.

The zen master replied, I put her down by the riverside, while you are still carrying her with you...

I think the concept is to let the past be past and live in the moment of now. But maybe it is just about zen masters getting to do what is forbidden to lesser mortals and justifying it as a teachable moment...
