Leading causes of death in US from disease

People often focus on the wrong things. Think of all the dumb bunnies who worried about being eaten by a shark after the film "Jaws" played! Death from shark attack happens about 30 times a year worldwide!

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for those under 33 in the US! Drowning kills lots of kids under 5, and home fires are also big killers of children. If one tenth of the money spent on child abuse and kidnapping prevention was spent on pool life guards and fire protection we would save a lot more kids!

So here are the latest statistics on disease caused deaths in women in the US in 2000:

Leading causes of death for women in the United States, 2000
(Deaths per year, per racial and ethnic group)
From Health, United States 2002, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics

All women Causes
Deaths
1 Heart Disease 365,953
2 Cancer 267,009
3 Stroke 102,892
4 Chronic lower respiratory diseases 62,005
5 Diabetes 37,699
6 Influenza and pneumonia 36,655
7 Alzheimer's disease 35,120
8 Accidents 34,083
9 Kidney disease 19,440
10 Septicemia 17,687

A healthier lifestyle with no cigarette smoking, less fat, more exercise and seeing a doctor when you need to would reduce these deaths.

Now you know better what to worry about!

As Spock says, "Live long and prosper!"

Unfortunately, the list from CDC doesn't include "medical accident" or malpractice, since that isn't a "disease". If it were included in the list, it would displace the top 3 causes of death on this list.

Not sure med malpractice is quite as death dealing as kev says. One study claimed 105 of the time major misdiagnosis or treatment. But how many would have died anyway from underlying problem? the avoidable things are try to live a healthy lifestyle and get second opinions if in doubt. Doctors are not infallible.
