Idealization and projection

In college a few years ago I studied psychology.

I recall some psych terms that describe what i have run into on AdultFriendFinder.

Projection is the mental process of taking some idea or fantasy the person has and ascribing it to the other guy, the victim of the fantasy. This seems to happen to me occasionally and I have to admit it is funny if somewhat baffling. Some of the things I am accused of thinking are not even close to accurate.

Idealization is the old dichotomy of the madonna and whore, which I thought was confined to women. Wrong again as I have been put on a pedestal and then rudely thrown to the ground. Their fantasies are intruding into my reality!

How many of you have been bitten by these psychouts?

It's happened to me. A few bipolar people who have well, taken what they hate about themselves and tried to project onto me. It baffles me to be accused of things that couldn't be further from the truth.

I've also been the victim of idealization. I try to dissuade them of the notions that they build up about me, try to tell them I'm not that person at all and then, when they discover their fantasy was wrong, I was telling the truth, you can see their faces fall at the disappointment. It's never a happy thing.
