Harriet Meiers

Sad that she got trampled by the right wing. The excuse about her confidential advice to Bush is ludicrous because they knew she would be asked for info on her job as White House Counsel. She was not that well qualified, but less competent and qualified than Clarence Thomas? She was a member of Dallas city council and had been Texas State Bar President.

I think she got a raw deal and some of the attacks on her were sexist.

As for lack of prior judicial experience, also true of Chief Justice Earl Warren and William Douglas to name just two examples. Sandra D. O'connor was a state legislator and not that distinguished compared to John Roberts, for example.

Will be interesting to see if Bush goes with a right wing ideologue now or a moderate conservative.

Unfortunately Roe V Wade will be the determining factor on this pick. The Extreme Right will not allow anyone adamant about overturning it to be confirmed. I think the Georgie Porgie is afraid of these people!

"We expected President Bush to appoint a woman with the opposite judicial philosophy and paper trail of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Our disappointment is acute." - Phyllis Schlafley

"Though she attends an Evangelical church known for its pro-life position, during the same time period she advanced radical feminists and organizations that promote agendas that undermine respect for life and family." - Wendy Wright, Concerned Women for America

"The President promised to nominate jurists in the mold of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. To date, there is no objective evidence confirming that Ms. Miers holds a judicial philosophy consistent with these two Justices." - Ken Connor, former President of the Family Research Council

What are they all saying? She won't vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade, so we don't want her. Well, all they've done is given the left a chance to shoot down anyone who is conservative enough for these people. It's going to be fun to watch.

Bush should forget the right wing crowd and go with someone with great credentials like John Roberts had. If abortion is the litmus test, and bush picks a true prolifer there will be a Democrat filibuster and holy war a la Bork.
