Grand Duchess LA Opera

Went to the LA Opera premiere of Offenbach's "Grand Duchess" Sat. night. Some observations:

Lots of old people attend opera, not like the crowd for the X Games!

Some people really know and love opera, some just come to the show to socialize and to show off evening wear. Where else do women wear elegant evening clothes? Senior Prom?

Opera is slow! The singing in French, with English subtitles drags on. They same the same thing about a dozen times.

This opera is played for laughs with extras thrown in to sugarcoat the pill that it lasts three hours with a 20 minute intermission. I would cut it to two hours and get rid of the intermission.

Opera is expensive! Each seat cost $115 in the Loge and still the large cast, costumes and orchestra meant they lost money which donors have to make up. Best seats were $230 each! LA Opera company celibrated its 20th season.

The best part was one lovely aria Frederica Von Stade sung about unrequited love. So pretty!

I am not seriously cultured enough to really enjoy opera and classical music. They put me to sleep!
I do enjoy art museums and ballet more for some reason. I admit to being a middlebrow.

I join Mark Twain in his comments about Wagner's music, that it is not as bad as it sounds! Applies to classical music and opera for me.
