Backup management for son!

Interesting to think about the changed roles in raising a son. Mine is now 23 and living back East. You go from micromanaging his life, to consulting, to just being available for an opinion if asked, next you step in only if he has a meltdown.

When a kid in under five, you just feed him. Then you ask him do you want X or Y? Later, you recommend a good selection, but let him decide. Still later you comment only if asked, or if there is a problem. After 18 the kid is an adult. His life to decide how to he wants to live.

But if he is too fat or too thin you might stage an intervention to save a life (from bulimia or toxic obesity for example!)

This backing off from direct responsibility is proper; free will is only possible if you nurture independence. I am offended by the over protective and over involved parent. Give a kid some space! With some rope the kid can hang himself or make a lasso and catch a steer for a BarBQue! His life, his way.
