One Of the Adventures of the Old Guy on Line

After my first profile got zero response, I came up with a new idea to attract some reaction.

I'm a pretty good photographer. Used to do fashion shoots eons ago, but the wife had "issues" with that. Now no wife, and no "issues".

I asked myself..."self what do I want? I want to meet women."

So I changed the profile and noted that a lot of the pix posted aren't showing off the best of the ladies...so why not offer to shoot their pix for them for free...accomplishes two goals...get to meet some ladies...and being a voyuer at heart... well, you understand.

A couple of my buddies thought this was an outrageous idea...

Problem was...zero response.

Now onto the third version of the profile...and now this blog. First time ever blogging.

Wow, so what kind of pictures do you take??!!

puntachueca replies on 4/5/2006 1:11 pm:
Take a wide variety of pictures...political campaigns, landscapes, animals, commercial photos....
What fascinates me is a lot of the pix on this and other similar sites don't tell much of a story. You picture is good....prompts a lot of imagination...
a picture is an invitation...come get to know me. so the question is "why?" the picture ought to offer at least a hint of the answer....
the very best people pix are candids...where you catch the essence of the person....and if you meet them in real life there's a one-to-one match in what people "saw" in 2 dimnesions versus the 3D reality.

Wow, i never thought of it like that. Its almost more arrousing to have that mystery and inticipation. So are you into advertizing? What kind of commercials do you do?

puntachueca replies on 4/5/2006 10:04 pm:
Pretty much anything that pays. The fun stuff has been political work and issues things. The question always starts with "why should you?"
vote for Joe, oppose that law, contribute to that group that wants to save (whatever) (notice there's always a baby seal or something in that kind of ad)....
in fashion...of course you want the perfect body to fit in the outfit so that everyone else will run out and buy it thinking they'll look exactly like that(which they rarely do). And you want to create a certain kind of mood....look at some fashion pix and write down what you think the ood ofthe scene is...like where off pic is the hunk watching...it's all about getting people to do something they hadn't thought about doing before seeing...
and there's always a hint of more to come....

puntachueca replies on 4/5/2006 10:06 pm:
...And specifically in your case...that thong showing underneath...very nice touch!!!

Thanks for that, i take it you like...So have you ever been into taking pics of models like photoshoots and all that jazz?? I was always interested in being a model, so i wondered how those photo shoots would work.

puntachueca replies on 4/5/2006 11:08 pm:
Yes. And they're a lot of work.
Pick the location or stage the setting....
get all the clothes and jewelry and makeup right...
deal with all the unanticipated problems...indoor..lights make it very warm..outdoor...there's always bugs, gawkers, stuff turning up in the background...
work all day to get 1 or 2 spectacular shots.
everyone is tired and pissed.
good models know how to strike and hold a pose...longer than is comfortable...and give you that "look"...best thing is to have someone shoot a lot of pix of you....like hundreds....and you do different "roles"...got to have a good face shot and a portfolio and then get your package out to ad agencies...every shoot wants a certain kind of "look" and the decision people go through portfolios, pick the best 3 or 4 then call them in for a test shoot.
no matter where you are...these's always an opporunity to model...but you've got to figure out what you project...like would you fit into a scene for an ad for an Indian Casino? look at all the people you see in ads...which one of them are you? Modeling starts with being "seen".

Wow that does seem like a lot of work, but i guess its totally worth it in the end. Having your picture taken all day and getting paid for it doesn't sound like the worst job in the world. But yea you're right the trick is to be seen. I guess i'll have to work on that

puntachueca replies on 4/7/2006 1:22 am:
I don't think you'll have to work that hard at it. You're already doing it, in fact. You're getting seen right now...

The main thought is just do it...people assume there's only like one big place to go, and they don't recongize that one's gotta start somewhere, and that somewhere is usually right in front of them, but they're looking off way past that and don't see what's right there. Same with relationships.
First thing is to get someone to want to use your picture in connection with something else...tying a mood or an idea to that smethinbg else.
Am enjoying this exchange

As am I, you are very knowledgable about this sort of stuff. I appreciate any advice you care to share with me!!! So i just need to continue to be seen!

puntachueca replies on 4/7/2006 4:50 pm:
OK. I'd rather take this offline here and communicate more directly. you can reach me at jrossbrowne2 at the hot place for mail since we're not supposed to put our email addresses on this site.
JRoss is one of my pen names...the original was a travel and adventure writer in the west back in the 1850's and 60's. He wrote a book called "Adventures in Apache Land". Among the other things I do is travel and adventure writing...great way to get free trips, hotel rooms, etc. I'm thinking about a book called "Adventures of an Old Guy in Cyberland"...
So far..you are the only adventure...curious about your experiences so far...who shot the pic you are using...do you have any more? Like a face pic(I've got my face in the second layer on the profile) show me your various "looks"...what I mean is...your styles or images...like "girl in an evening gown" or "girl out in nature" or "athletic girl" or whatever...pix that say what you are and do "girl sitting at a desk being bored to death"..."work, play, home, recreation, with others doing whatever......
also, if you can...get someone to shoot about 100 pictures of just your face...with full makeup and without...got to get to the point where you are not aware of being photographed...sometimes a good way to do this is get together with a small group of close friends, start joking around, and have the photog shoot a series of face shots... the point is to get a feel for your expressions...happy, sad, pissed...whatever...try for a full range...the point is to see your natural range...the unposed, un-self aware you.

and some of the quesions I'm raising in the other blog posts...what do you think? I'd like your reactions, observations....
Putting stuff out there on line raises the proverbial question... "when a tree falls in a forest and no one was there to hear it...does it make a sound?" Hey...one of the points of this is to see if I can really meet a real live woman in person, and so far...not even close. Must be something I'm doing wrong here...

It would be my pleasure helping you get paid to have your picture taken. That sounds like some good fun exchanges.

Wow, i would love to get paid to have my picture taken that would be unbelievable! As for my pic i took it of myself, i've never had anyone taking my pics before other than like professional head shots and i only have like 2 of those. I was thinking about sending them into model scout agencies. What do you think about that idea? I really would love some more of your input!!!

puntachueca replies on 4/9/2006 5:56 pm:
Indeed, get your head shots out there.
The way this works you've got to make 100 tries...to get 1 response. Don't get discouraged if you get a lot of rejections, persistence pays off. Be carseful, though, there are a lot of "agencies" which really aren't...they'll just charge you a bunch of money to do more pix and give you some classes...but they won't connect you.
One of the best ways to track down real opportunities is pick an ad with people in it like yourself, and then track down the ad adgency that made the ad...then ask them where they get their "talent" from...that's the outfit to pitch to. Or, when checking out a mmodel agency, check where they've placed people...have they?
Anothert thing...look at this from the agency/end user side. They have 1000 head shots and they scan over them pretty quickly to pick a small pool to look at more closely. Thus your pic has to jump out of the masses. This is why the photographer is extremely important...get a really good photographer who captures that special essence of you that jumps off the paper and you will have a better chance.
Another suggestion...think of yourself in different roles you can fit...personas...and shoot series in those different personas...even head shots. Hair up, hair down, vamp, housewife, student, athlete...becayuse if you are called for a looksee, your portfolio is crucial...they will look over all the different "yous" and if one fits where they are going...voila!!
Tell me a little about Nova Soctia...I'm down here in the SW corner of the US and where you are is about as far away as I could imagine.
And what are you studying?
I have 2 daughters that recently graduated college and both are out there struggling...both are writers and musicians, doing crappy day jobs until they are "discovered".

Also, think New York instead of Hollywood. It's closer, too.

puntachueca replies on 4/9/2006 5:58 pm:
Another thought...have you taken any acting clasess? If not, do so. This seriously helps. Also, if there is an improvisational comedy troop around, and they do any classes or workshops, do that as well.
Stage presence, running lines, all that is great training.

Yea i never thought of acting classes as well, that would be kind of interesting. i would love to be an actress and a model what a dream job. You have a lot of insight to this and i appreciate everything that u tell me!!!

From your profile I see you are in Nova Scotia. Had an encounter on the phone the other day with a lady at a call center for Cingular Wireless who was in Halifax...she was really nice and had a great voice. We talked for over an hour. Had a fantasy it was you.
Phone sex with a call center lady....
Realized that I have no a clue what Halifax is like...other than it is very very far away from the Arizona-Mexico border where I am.
I'm thinking...maybe this summer I'll go up that way just to go somewhere really different from down this way...and if I get up that way, could I take you out to dinner?

Wow, you had a fantasy about me, i'm flattered. Well if you come over this way i'd love dinner, we could catch up that would be niceThats quite the trip, any reason why a long roadtrip? Just some new scenery. Tell me more of your photography experiences and what more i should do to put myself out there!!!

puntachueca replies on 4/19/2006 10:48 pm:
The American road trip is an enduring tradition. More likely I'd fly somewhere in the vicinity and roam around in a car from there. The only time I was in Canada was Vancouver--glorious city. I have a friend in Montreal who sent me a really funny article about the fuss over salmon between the US and Canada..the problem being the salmon couldn't tell where the border was and the fish couldn't understand the difference between Canadian English and American English. Thus the fish needed bilingual education...I run a satirical website called the frumious bandersnatch which is internationally infamous.
Tell me a little about Halifax...local advertising...local media.
And tell me more about yourself.

halifax is a cute little city, not as big as most of the usa. It has lots of character. I don't know a lot about the media or advertising, although i'd love to learn more about that particular field. Tell me more about your hometown.

puntachueca replies on 4/25/2006 5:33 am:
Well I live south of Tucson which is the biggest city in the area...about 1 million people. Kind of like every American city except there's mountains around it. I'm down close to the border with Mexico and a very different area...the majority of the population is Hispani. We are kind of the front line of the debate in the country over illegal immigration. Since the majority of folks around here originally came from Mexico, they have a very different view about the issue from the racist types in the interior of the country. I have joking suggested the US should apply its same tactics along our norhern border...only harassing the really pale people who are obviously Canadians trying to sneak into the US to take advantage of our crummy health care system.
So what are you studying in college?

Hahaha, i am taking my bachelor of arts, and dont't know what i will do after that. I'm goin into my third year. My main dream is to become a model/actress, which is like 1 in a million, so we'll just have to see i guess.

puntachueca replies on 4/28/2006 4:25 am:
Probably every goal, at the beginning, is at least a 1 in a million proposition. What it takes is a lot of work, persistence, and luck.
What is really sad, looking from my vantage point of over 50 years, is all the people who had dreams, never pursued them, and then ended up old and bitter.
It may sound trite, but it doesn't matter whether or not you succeed...the success is in the trying. Because along the way you will have a lot of adventures, meet a lot of new people, and maybe find something along the way that is even more worth pursuing and take off in that direction.
Please send me a face pic so I can better help point you in a direction for your effort.

I loved reading this entire dialog. I hate having my picture taken, as I hate "posing". I do, however, like "candid shots". Keep hoping to someday have somebody to follow me around and take such photo's Um... no PI's or FBI or anything like that though lol.

I need to learn more about photography. I have an art project that will require photographing afterwards in order to "submit" it. Assuming I ever do. There's surely a whole lot of stuff I need to figure out before I get to that point, like lighting, setting, etc.

An interesting exchange that was....like if I ever get to Nova Scotia maybe I have a date....4000 miles away....trying to reduce the distance.

Worked with a lot of models in my younger days...completely oblivious in some ways...shy they are not.

Most of the people work I do now is candid...like to get those expressions that are not posed...real people...catch a little of their soul. did a lot of political photography over the years...getting priceless hsots of people interacting with the politician (a lot of which never saw the light of day---my favorite was a Congressman standing on a soap box with an audience full of old people carrying rifles)

If ou need some advice, try,e at jrossbrowne2atthe hotplace dot com (code there).
