Do I dare eat a peach?

The count down begins.
Two weeks. 14 days. Sixty.

I remember the first big count down.
06 …First grade
16… Driver’s license.
18 ... Eligible for the draft
21 …Legally able to drink.
30… Too old to trust
40 …Middle age?
50 …Age of mother at her death…managed to live longer.

And so here I am, not where I’d expected to be.
Single again.
No pension so no chance of retirement.
Lived the equivalence of several lifetimes.

In good health.
Mind still works well.
Sex drive intact.

But I just can’t get enthusiastic about this birthday. No “celebration” planned.

Am doing a lot of thinking about “what next?”

What’s the next great life adventure?

I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
--The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. TS Eliot

My mother died when she was 33. I never thought I would outlive her either. That was a hard birthday for me. Oh.....and I love T.S. Eliot. I was just reading that the other day. "Do I dare? Do I dare?" In your present mood, though, I would recommend E.E. Cummings, I Like My Body When It Is With Your. Or maybe, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Love Is Not All.

Good suggestions. TS must have been depressed a lot. But he's my fav.

... celebrate the wisdom you have achieved and the people who have benefited from that ...

Thanks. I have a lot of good stuff done so far...and it is neat to contemplate the combination of the wisdom and experience that comes with age and the ability to keep on going for another..probably the best...round.

And it gets a lot done, too. Folks around here don't have a lot of money...but they have skills and time and they share. Wonderful stuff.
