Agree and go

Last year I learned a wonderful and highly useful new philosophy of a very odd place...improvisational comedy training.

The philosophy is "Agree and go".

In improv if someone says something, you must "agree and go" with whatever. It is not fun nor entertaining to listen to people argue.

In most conversation someone will say something, and immediately the other person will disagree, put down, discount, or change the subject to them. This gets annoying.

On the other hand, if you agree with whatever someone else says..and then go...wherever...and they in turn agree with whatever you say and go with it...the result is pretty amazing.

Try it and see what happens... respond with "you're right" or I agree" and take off with it.

This seems to disagree with what you said in response to my comment on your other post "puntachueca replies on 7/8/2006 6:25 am:
But there is great opportunity for learning and growth in disagreement as long as it is polite and constructive.

So Ok now Im really confused.

My understanding of your previous post was that when you disagreed with someone, you tended not to post. I was just inviting you to disagree with anything I was posting. The agree and go approach has been very helpful for me in a lot of responsibilities especially, and also being a lawyer, I think I was overly contentious. Where I kind of draw the line is with people that if you say the sun rises in the east they're going to dispute that just for the sake of provoking an argument. There's healthy disagreement, and then there's egoic control games picking fights disagreement.
