Being in Charge/Quotes from

Never react, never explain, never apologize...get the thing done and let them howl.
---Nellie McClery

There are so many levels on which one could respond to this quote. At one level, it sounds like advice on how to be a bulldozer and rundown anyone who offers opposition. I don't recommend that.
At another level, one can zero in on the time lost in explaining, reacting, and apologizing, while the house is burning down. There is something to be said for just moving ahead.
And at another level, when we clearly feel the direction we must take and the job we must get done, there is a certain serenity that emerges when we are truly willing to "let them howl."

How wonderful that every issue has so many levels of truth. That makes life anything but dull.

You are right - when you know what needs to be done, it's best to just do it and "let the chips fall where they may".

It is refreshing to see "truth" used without a capital "T." I'm not saying that Truth doesn't exist, but the label has certainly been co-opted by the Have's to keep the Have-not's wanting.

A cool mind-exercise I use when driving long distances (yes, I'm not only a scumbag, I'm a nerd too) is to read a sign and dice it into different possible meanings--on the words alone. Yes, I'm sure "Slow Down" is intended to convery the advice that you should probably decrease the speed of your vehicle. But it could also be a dog owner's command for her dog named "Slow" to assume a pronate position. It could mean that the feathery insides of a certain pillow don't fall all that fast, or it could make a cool brand name of a down pillow. If a horny guy's last name is Down, it could be specific directions from a cool lover for him to take it easy. And on and on and on.

The point? Language has a power that can easily be manipulated and imposed on the non-thinking masses. It might not sound like a big thing, but just try to get two people to agree on an interpretation of a single word like "love" or "honesty." Believe it or not, our powerful human structure of language has inadequacies galore.

One of my personal favorite lines is actually from Robert DeNiro (no, not Derrida or Kierkegaard). I'll botch the exact quote, but in . . . (shit, I forgot the movie--Heat?) . . . DeNiro tells his protege Val Kilmer, "Never get involved with anything that you wouldn't be able to walk away from in 30 seconds."

I see nerdy boys are long winded. I must admit I liked hearing the quote but I have never lived it. I could not imagine living my life purposely trying not to attach to things...it's like crab meat without the shell...it's cleaner and easier to eat but take away the mess and it loses something for me.{=}
