Diving and Goodbyes....

Okay, picture this, I'm sitting in my bedroom on this computer typing an email to a friend. I'm looking out my bedroom window, and a vehicle drives by. They stop, back up, and proceed to go through my neighbor's trash. Obviously they find something b/c I see them carrying a box to their vehicle. Well, the kid is still going through the trash. They eventually leave. My neighbor had a round card table that I thought about going over to ask if I could buy from her. It was old, but I figured that it still was working good it was worth something! Anways, back to my story. Well, my neighbor must have had some good stuff in her trash, b/c not 30 minutes later they came back! Yes, BACK! Dug around in the trash for awhile more, and took the card table! I was like ! lol. At least I was going to go ask how much she wanted for it! My neighbor is 84 years old, she's moving out of town with her daughter. I'm extremely sad to see her go, she's been my neighbor for at least 24 years of my life. She's been my child's neighbor for the last 3 years as well. My child is crazy about her, goes over and visits, helps her pick up sticks and trash, talks to her, asks her questions, and she laughs and talks in return. She will even bring back a toy that was carted over there if its forgotten. She asks and checks up on my child to see if, my child is sick or not. A WONDERFUL neighbor. I'm sad to see her go, and worried about what kind of neighbor I will get in her stead.

I've been to several yard sales, but I've never gone Dumpster Diving. Have you? *sigh* Its going to be hard when she's actually going to be moving out out. Any suggestions on what I could do to let her know how wonderful I think a neighbor she was?

I don't know how to choose 2 moods on here, but I'm amused by the dumpster divers and sad about losing a great neighbor.....

UPDATE: The white chairs she put out last night are MIA this morning. Someone must have went dumpster diving EARLY, b/c I was up at 7 a.m. lol. Well hey, thats early for me!

UPDATE TO UPDATE: No more dumpster diving today! lol. The trash truck just ran and picked up all the trash. lol I suppose I will have to wait until next Wednesday and Thursday for my weekly edition of Dumpster Diving 101.

I haven't ever seen anyone go through trash bags or dumpsters, but around here it is common to leave appliances or large items, like tables, that one is throwing out near your garbage, and people that want them will come and take them. Me, I'm not at all mechanically inclined, so I'm no good at fixing things, and most of them are more expensive to repair than to replace, so I take advantage of it. I've left a broken down air conditioner, a stationary bike and other stuff out there and, lo and behold, they've disappeared.

Ocelot...I have had people dumpster dive in from my trash before. Its hilarious watching them cart off those big things. Like these old old old OLD chairs that were once in my basement. They were that yucky avocado green pleather upolstered chairs. ICK! In fact, what is funny is my neighbor has some white ones out sitting by the road now. Should I carry 'em home? lol

Purry...I seen the man carrying a box, didn't see any papers or anything. All her other trash is still tied up. I'm not sure but isn't there some kind of law that states if something is in the trash and so many feet close to the road, its the city's property? Something like that. The people dumpster diving live down the road and well, they are kind of different. I'm not to sure if they would know what to do with someone else's personal information. Yep, its THAT bad.

Lusty...I dunno, I would be tempted to dumpster dive depending on whose house it was. Think about it, Nicole Kidman? Martin Lawrence? Tom Cruise? Hmmm...nix the last one, prolly get some scientology stuff. Hmmmm...who else? I'm sure there would be someone's trash you'd go through! lol. I live in the house I grew up in. So I've had several neighbors pass away. This is the first one moving away or leaving since I've been back. She even gave my child an afghan she croceted when I had my baby! I still have it, its in my hope chest. One man used to ride his bicycle with me and pretend he had no brakes. Would terrify me that he would crash into something or me! Then the neighbors 2 houses down would sit in their metal lawn chairs and watch us ride bikes and laugh. I would stop and chat with them. Then there was the lady that used to run me outta her yard, I wouldn't go IN her yard, but she had this nifty little ditch bridge that was just PERFECT to ride a bike on. When I finally moved back and bought the house, she started coming over and visiting with me and my neighbor that is moving. She told me she really enjoyed watching us play and ride our bikes, her grandkids didn't come over alot. I just wish I knew what to do to let her know. . Oops...wrote a book in this reply!

find out something that she really enjoys doing. wether it be going to see a good show, or taking her to the park to feed the ducks and geese bread. i'm not talking date wise, but something simple enough that an elderly lady can trully enjoy.i had a neighbor lady like that, and i always called her my grandmother even tho she wasn't. but she treated me like family and i will always adore her for it. i'm saddened to say that she passed away while i was out of town. but i'll always remember her for being a great friend. i do recomend that you try to take a few road trips to visit her where ever she moves to.
on the other hand, i've dumpster dived once. took the trash out and had my keys in the same hand as the trash bag. threw the bag and my keys into the dumpster.
as for new neighbors, if they turn out to be pricks, call me up and i'll come down there. install prison bars on the doors and windows while their asleep. syran wrap the house and wrap chains around it so you don't have to put up with them.

Unfortunately yes, an instinct imbeded in my frugal family's DNA...

I'd have been tempted to quickly run out their and hoc a big luggee on it and said something like "Still want it now chief?" and if they did go with plan B, or more accurately...plan Pee... LOL

seriously, your new neighbor probably won't even come close to the quality of this one, at least if my family's new neighbors experience is any indicator. Good friendships are not easily built and it seems less and less people have time for them, unfortunately!

Squeze...those are good ideas. Keep in mind she's 84, she doesn't go to the movies! lol. She's typically in bed by dark and up before the sun! lol. She does enjoy flower beds and gardening. Might get her something to plant from us? A rose bush perhaps? Thats not quite the dumpster diving I'm referring to. lol. Thats happened to me a few times, at first I question if the keys are really THAT necessary. I might have to do that if its necessary. There are some neighbors that I would like that to be done to now! When are you available?

AdultFriendFinder B. To funny! I'm sure it wouldn't stop some people though. Scary thought! Your right, my new neighbor probably won't be as great as this one. I wish there were big neighborhood get together on holidays. The "block" parties, the bringing over goodies for when a family member was sick. lol. Although, I've never been around for the block parties, always sounded like great fun to me! She even got my child something for Christmas, she baked homemade fudge, brownies, and cookies! My child still asks her if she has any more. Awwwwww, I think I'm going to cry!

Cool! Another opportunity to exercise my talent for pedantry!

Different localities may have laws about this, but for the country as a whole, it's a bit different. There is no federal law that anything put in the garbage becomes the city's property, no matter where you place it relative to the street.

However, the Supreme Court has ruled that you have no expectation of privacy regarding anything you put in the trash outside your home. This means that no search warrant is required, and there are no 4th Amendment implications, for law enforcement officials to go through your trash and find incriminating evidence. They can do it whenever they feel free.

"Any suggestions on what I could do to let her know how wonderful I think a neighbor she was?"

Send her a nice bouquet of flowers and use the card to invite her over to your place for a nice dinner. And regarding the dumpster diving stuff... well... "One man's junk is another man's treasure!"

Ilsuconu...great suggestion, except what would I cook for her? lol. I'd be quite a bit intimidated cooking her dinner. What if she didn't like it???? I'm quite limited in my culinary abilities.

Hmm dumpster Diving... We have a few of those around my house... I call them Target practice... it is funny watchin the paint splat on their asses when they bend over to pick something up or multipule people pick something up, pick the one with the heaviest side & shoot'em in the butt with a paint ball gun...woot. Shot one today...one thing comes to mind..."Bull's Eye" lol.
Now I am not sayin that it works for everyone but I tend to get alittle nervious when I bunch of Teens & pre-teens go anywhere near my house lol.

Later.
