Regarding Henry

As I sit here...thinking about the events that culminated mind flashed on the movie "Regarding Henry," that starred Harrison Ford and Annette Bening.

Basically, it's about a man that has attained power, status, and perfection in his career, but really doesn't have anything outside of his work. He's cheating on his wife...who is cheating on him...his daughter views him as Attila the Hun...and he's too self-absorbed to condescend himself to even say hello or acknowledge the doorman or his maid.

All of that changes after he's the victim of a botched hold-up...gets shot...and winds up as a simpleton, unable to function in his career or everyday life. But he does become a loving, caring, family man, who puts the value of his wife and daughter above anything else.

Yesterday, I received an official notification decision that hit me like a ton of bricks. It had to do with an incident that occurred a few months ago...that could have resulted in both a financial and reputation ruin for one of the companies that I represent.

I received the official paperwork only 10 days ago, with a limited response time to accept or contest their findings. This past Wednesday, I was given the opportunity to present the contestment, and I delivered a very brief, but concise case. I was the only representative from the company in attendance, which made me feel a little like Daniel in the lion's den.

Some additional paperwork had to be faxed to them, but there appeared to be at least a chance to have the severity of both the wording and monetary penalty amounts, reduced.

I received a fax notification yesterday morning that, as soon as I read the cover page, had me whooping out loud.

It read in part,
"all citations and penalties are being withdrawn."

I couldn't believe it..! In the 20 years I've been in this career field, I've never even heard of a decision like this..! Sometimes, the severities of the citations are lessened, and sometimes the monetary penalties are lowered. Rarely, but a few times, both have been lowered. There are even a few cases that have been argued formally, in courts of law, all the way up to the Supreme Court, but the outcome did not change the original citation levels of severity or fines.

This to an accomplishment that can only be compared to being the Pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series...striking out all 18 batters on the other team....and getting the only hit, by hitting a solo home run, to win the perfect game, 1 -- 0.

After reading over the notification decision...several times...I called Mrs. Prag.

Tears of happiness...relief...exhaustion, but elation...rolled down my face as I shared the news with her.

She's had to put up with my "being in another world," for a couple of weeks...and especially with this week's culmination of's understandable that I've been preoccupied most of the time.

After I got off the phone with my lovely wife, I went into his office and told the company President of the decision. His face broke out in a huge smile...something that doesn't happen often. He pumped my hand in a handshake...used every complimentary phrase in the book, like "Well Done..!"...and then left to go to his next appointment.

After finishing up with the aftermath reports and copying of the notification decision to everyone involved...I called it a day and drove home.

Mrs. Prag's happiness and praise for my accomplishments, when I got home, were much more personal and loving than the company President's had been..!

I had stopped at a liquor store on the way home, and bought a small bottle of our favorite champagne. Last night, Mrs. Prag toasted me on my success, as we shared the moment...and the champagne.

So yes...I've attained an adroit status in my career. Following my superior, my peers and subordinates will all have their own congratulatory comments, that hopefully, will bear compensatory reward, come annual salary review time...and I would expect, that once word gets out to the rest of the country, that I'll be fielding a multitude of inquiries from my counterparts, and their companies.

But I have to be honest with you...without being able to share my happiness with my wouldn't have the same meaning.

All of the praise, admiration, success, and recognition in the corporate business nothing, compared to being with my wife to share my happiness. And having her hold me in her arms and tell me that she's proud of really the only "reward" that is worth anything.

Let's see...if I had gone "Rambo" on them...I'd be out of a job...blacklisted...would've had two guys named Tony and Guido waiting for me...and an opportune moment to exact the company owner's revenge on me.......
