My day Today ...

I had some little bit of wry wisdom I had written to post today … but something which happened today made me come home and write this piece …

In the course of my work I, on occasion, get to travel to the Mississippi Gulf Coast ... and today was the first time since before Hurricane Katrina that I had a chance to go. Now being from New Orleans I have seen alot of devastation in the past few months, whole sections of the city abandoned, piles of debris over 50 feet high. But today, while driving down Highway 90 between Long Beach and Gulfport, well it was unbelievable … nothing but destruction for two maybe three blocks inland … only foundations left in place … and it all sank in …

Then as I was coming up on Gulfport there was this tugboat called the SS Hurricane Camille, which if I remember washed ashore in that hurricane, and was turned into a gift shop … well there was the tug … still facing the sea … maybe not in the exact spot it was before Katrina but it was there … the shop was gone … hell every building for two blocks around was gone … but there was that tugboat sitting there facing the sea … about where it landed 36 years before … I hope they leave it there and build that little shop around it again … It seems that it deserves to be there …

And of course they will rebuild on the Gulf Coast as they did 36 years ago after Camille … as we in New Orleans will also rebuild … but it just amazes me at how powerful the forces of nature can be … to wipe off the face of the earth, homes and businesses for two to three blocks inland …

One other thing that caught my eye was the many old oak trees that seem to have survived the storm, at least in the Gulfport area … all the man-made structures were gone around them … but most stood tall …

The Gulf Coast will also stand tall again … just as those trees stand tall facing the sea …
