Pulitzers & Other Readings

One of my plans this summer was to read all of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winners. Like anything, it was a pretty random list...

But I thought it might be a good way to uncover some hidden gems.

I went out and bought: Gilead (excellent read.. strongly recommended); Ghost Wars (another fab book); Ted Kooser - Poetry - 13th Poet Laureate of the United States(see below - a new find for me!)and finally the biography of de Kooning.. an amazing painter that I had heard of but had never seen nor appreciated.. that is one of his pics by this post..

I guess the lesson is... it is always a good thing to push one's boundaries.. literature.. arts.. sexual.. there are always pleasant surprises in store.. and if nothing else.. you might discover something new about yourself.. How could it possibly get any better than that..

Anyone want a "read-once" copy of Gilead.. going cheap!

After Years

Today, from a distance, I saw you
walking away, and without a sound
the glittering face of a glacier
slid into the sea. An ancient oak
fell in the Cumberlands, holding only
a handful of leaves, and an old woman
scattering corn to her chickens looked up
for an instant. At the other side
of the galaxy, a star thirty-five times
the size of our own sun exploded
and vanished, leaving a small green spot
on the astronomer's retina
as he stood on the great open dome
of my heart with no one to tell.

Ted Kooser
