Lord Byron - This Week End

There will be an excellent special on Byron on TV this Saturday. Byron was the Prince, or the Squiggly Jig he became, of his day.

He is probably my favourite of the Romantics. A close second would be Shelley.

Born with a club foot.. lady's man.. man's man.. lol. His incestuous liaison with Augusta - his half sister was the scandal of the day. Died of a fever participating in a doomed uprising in Greece in 1824. Oh... How Byronic..

The all time classic of his output remains..

She walks in Beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place
