Poetry Call and Response

Poetry Call and Response
As some of you already know, I am a poet. I happened to come across some poems I wrote recently and one, in particular, stuck out with me. The situation in which I wrote the poem came back like a sack of bricks. The whole experience came back. As is usual in these times, I needed to respond. So I'm going to share with you two pieces that I wrote...the original written some time back and the response, just written tonight.

When The Storybook Closes

Do you?
Do you love?
Do you love me?
Do you love loving me?
Or do you just love loving?

We have slain the dragon of your past
We have crossed the gorge of my fears
We have defeated your witch of a mother
We have made it past my pain-plagued spirit
And now we have come to the kiss

The kiss that causes the earth to
Stop moving
The kiss that parts the clouds
The kiss that showers us in ambrosia
The kiss that makes us both bend at the knees
And give way to the power and passion
Emitted from the lips of our beloved

And we live happily ever after
And we live happily forever
After
After what?

After I come home from work
with my boss breathing fire
After you are done arguing with your family
locked in the eternal emotional prisons of guilt
After accounting for our joint statements
and watching our dream home become
a two-bedroom apartment with a faulty pilot light
rising rent, and neighbors who scream like banshees
After your mother, my mother, and mother nature pass
and the grief overcomes our happily ever after?

After that?
After we live
After we live that
Is there a happily ever after?
Can we live ever after?
Can we live happily after?
Can we live happily forever
After that?
No
So
Can we love happily ever after?
Can we love forever?
Can we love happily?
Can we love happily…
Forever…
After the storybook closes

Now, the response...

After The Storybook Closed

Do you still?
Do you still love?
Do you still love me?
Do you still love loving me?
Or do you still just love loving?

We slayed the dragon of your past
We crossed the gorge of my fears
We defeated your witch of a mother
We made it past my pain-plagued spirit

We, in turn, created a new dragon
Guarding an man-made moat of hurt, sorrow, and anger
We crossed the gorge of my fears
Only to stand on opposite sides of our moat
We defeated your mother to be beaten by mine
Because my man-made madness cursed our enchantment
We made it past my pain-plagued spirit
To walk into my pain-plagued present, since past
Pasted with fear, hurt, sorrow and anger
Which led us to the kiss

The kiss that caused the earth to
Stop moving
The kiss that parted the clouds
The kiss that showered us in ambivalence and animosity
The kiss that made us both bend at the knees
And give way to the power and passion
Emitted from the lips of our beloved
When we kissed each other goodbye

And we live ever after
Do we live happily?
Do we have a happily ever after?
Forever?
After that?

After I came home from work
with my boss breathing fire
After you were done arguing with your family
locked in the eternal emotional prisons of guilt
After you accounted for our joint statements
and watched our dream home become
a two-bedroom apartment with a faulty pilot light
rising rent, and neighbors who scream like banshees
After your mother, my mother, and mother nature passed over us
and the grief overcame our happily ever after?

After that?
After we live
After we live that
Is there an ever after?
After that?
Do we live ever after?
Can we live happily after?
Can we live happily forever?
After that?
No

So
Can we love happily ever after?
Can we love forever?
Can we love happily?
Can we love happily…
Forever…
