(Post from 10-13-04)
I just finished watching the last installment of the Presidential debate. Fiscal Responsibility vs. Rhetoric doesn't match Record. Dumb leadership vs. Strong leadership. I just listened to my roommate say 9/11 may have been the best thing to happen to us. I hate to say it but I agree with him. We also agree on one other thing, that We, as a country, did what we always do in these situations. We learned nothing! We united for a moment and went our separate ways. We lost and lost and thought we gained something when we got a handout tax cut. We're being told that our economy is growing, but it's mostly growing in part-time jobs that don't pay enough to keep a roof over our heads or feed our families. The biggest piece of the puzzle that urks the shit out of me. The fly in the ointment that no one wants to acknowledge. The lie we tell ourselves over and over and over and over again and I just can't take it anymore is that we don't have enough money. We don't have enough money. Where is the money going to come from? We have to be fiscally responsible. Will someone please take the bullhorn out of Bush and Kerry's collective asses and then drag them to the desk of anyone who has ever taken a Macro-economics class!!!!
I just watched a Major League Baseball playoff game between two teams that have an average payroll of $265 million dollars. I watched a World Poker Tour championship where they were playing for $2 million dollars as a share of a $8 million dollar pot. Movie stars make $5, $10, $20 million dollars a movie. Music stars make millions of dollars per record. Companies make billions of dollar exploiting, underpaying, providing no health care to domestic employees, and sending their jobs overseas. Companies like Mercedes-Benz, Dolce Gabana, Cartier, Nautica, Nike, General Motors, Kraft, Viacom, Time-Warner, Phizer, Gap, and Sprint make money hand over foot off the American public every damn day! We spend more money daily than some countries have as their GDP in a year! Can we please cut the crap! We have all the money we need right here in this country. We can provide quality education for every man, woman and child in this country. We can provide quality healthcare for every man, woman and child in this country. We can protect ourselves from any who would try to harm us. We can do all things for all people in this country, but we have to put US first!
Americans at-large didn't lose their jobs because we couldn't afford to sustain them. Americans lost their jobs because the companies weren't getting the same business from Americans and in cutting costs, Americans lost again. Americans at-large didn't lose their healthcare because we couldn't afford to pay for it, or companies stopped caring, or government fucked up the system, or lawyers gouged the industry, or even because HMO's depersonalized the industry of healthcare. We lost our healthcare because we started caring for our wealth more than our health. We wanted higher salaries to afford the luxuries that are hurled at us each and every day and so, in lowering domestic commerce and raising domestic wages we pushed companies, governments, and municipalities to put a lower premium on our health because we put a lower premium on our health.
We hit the ground running at the end of the Cold War and sucked money out of every hole it could come from. We decided that entertainment all-stars of today were worth millions when all the Classic artists and athletes were lucky if they ever came close to one million. We decided that a family of four had to have an SUV because vans and station wagons weren't good enough for us anymore...not for me, not for my child. We decided that we had to connect with the entire world instantanously via phone, fax, cellular, email, internet, broadband, satellite, cable and every medium known to man to open us up to every kernel of information the world has to offer, only to learn nothing and be bombarded with more greed. We have done this to ourselves and we want someone else to take the fall. Well, I'm not much interested in seeing anyone else take the fall because most of the world has fallen far enough because of us. Well, I don't know about you all, but I think I'm just going to cast my vote for Ralph Nader on election day and then move to Canada. Hockey isn't so bad.
