Roommate Scam - Be Warned!

Found a potential roommate online that fits these characteristics?
-------------------------------------------------------------

- a model

- on a shoot in Africa

- needs a room badly for a period of time, but does not ask a lot of questions about the room

- eager to arrange payment, even before you have spoken on the phone or otherwise confirmed identity

- eventually requires that a check or money order be sent to you directly from an "agency", whereupon you will cash it and send a portion back to your new roommate to facilitate her journey to the US.

-------------------------------------------------------------

If so, google "Nigerian Roommate Scam" and click on the first item:

Verisimilitude: Sometimes the Truth Hurts ยป Nigerian Roommate Scam

I just had a friend get her hopes up about a new potential roommate she found on a popular roommate website. It sounded fishy and she was unfamiliar with similar scams happening in the business world, so I started digging and this is what I found.

I doubt she would have cashed the money orders, but then again she has been laid off her job for a year, cannot find work, and is selling off vehicles and personal effects to pay bills, so she may have been tempted. All I'm saying is, these assholes are preying on renters, some of which are people who are in desperate need of money. Its easy to get your hopes up when you're just keeping your eyes peeled, waiting for a light at the end of the tunnel.

Stay alert out there folks. And spread the word. Chain letter emails don't work anymore, they just get deleted. But word of mouth is powerful and can save a few people some disappointment and trouble.

Same thing happened to my daughter in Hollywood. Same modus operendi. What should we do with the check she sent? Take it to the cops?
