The Tunnel.

I heard in the news recently that customs officials had discovered a very sophisticated tunnel running for one hundred metres under the US / Canadian border. They claim that it is probably being used by smugglers.

Could it not rather be used by Americans who've had enough and just want to get out without having to book out with the prison guards?

Um, excuse me. The United States is a free nation and we can emigrate as we wish. (as long as folks will take us in that is). I can appreciate your sarcasm, yet the facts are that there are more people who want to enter the U.S. than leave it.

Is this just another trick by keithcancook
to get his text on television?

I really appreciate the sarcasm! May be born and raised pure blooded American and still U.S. citizen, but I still think that's focking hilarious! Maybe they should make a spoof movie out of it and call it something like "Escape From the Immigrants."

Let me see,
Top10 reasons might people want to leave the US for Canada?
10 Bob and Doug McKinzie
9 The beer is better
8 Cold nights mean warm fireplaces and bear skin rugs
7 They arent Christian, and get tired of explaining what that means, to Christians who refuse to understand
6 They get tired of being harassed by the people from number 7
5 They would like to know that if something major happened they wouldn't be turned away from medical help just because they lack insurance or a credit card
4 They can say what they want without fear of appearing "UNAMERICAN"
3 They can be GAY if they want
2 There children will be like the children of every nation in the world except Americans (i.e. multi-lingual, and able to do higher math)
And.... the number one reason hy people might want to leave the "land of the free" is....
1 Legal Marijauna!!!!!! (A freedom americans Don't Have)

whooooo hooooo

Keith: humour finds different people in different forms, and I have no doubt that many believe the US to be still a free nation when compared to others. However, since it is the only nation in the world where you must be photographed and give fingerprints in order to enter ...

And, adding something which came to mind after I'd hit the send button: perhaps it's really for those many who want to get into the US but aren't in Mexico.

"Authorities say they watched the three men carry hockey bags and garbage bags full of pot through the 110-metre tunnel across the border and into waiting vans."

If you got the money and knowledge to build a 100m deep tunnel ("with a concrete floor, iron reinforcements and wooden supports") - why would you smuggle marijuana? Why this deep? "It is estimated that United States consumers of marijuana spent $9 billion in 1990." - What does such a tunnel cost? How much will three men carrying bags of pot over a 100m distance will earn?

Within an estimated radius of 10000 feet google maps show us Abbotsford International Airport and a regularborder crossing checkpost on the so called "Truck route" 539 'Guide Meridian Road'.

Despite the theory of one-third of the total U.S. marijuana supply
is coming from Canada - This story stinks.

1 I dont think the tunnel as 100 meters deep, maybe that was the length , it as probably 20 meters don at most, under the frostline. you ould not ant to have to go through bedrock so deeper is unlikely.
2 The tunnel could easily be built for as little as $300,000 dollars
3 the value of the weed (assuming 70 lbs a bag) is around $50,000 per bag.
4 assuming the cost of product purchase and paying for labor, the breakeven on the tunnel is about 900 lbs of weed, or 13 hockey bags.
If the three of them made four trips each (and if they owned the tunnel) it paid for itself.

Of course, we don't know how long the tunnel has been there, or what it was mainly used for but, I should imagine they had no problems covering their costs no matter what was transported.

dz: it would be a major embarrassement for the authorities if they were to admit that the tunnel was built without their knowedge, so of course they 'always knew about it' and were always 'monitoring' it: what do you expect them to say?
