Something's wrong with the world.

You probably already know it; there are so many things in our world which simply defy belief. Each day there are short articles in the newspapers, fillers in the news programs, spots on Blogs and on current events shows which even the most serious channels simply cannot turn down, and deliver with a rueful smile.

In Chile an appeals court has finally decided that the former President, General Augusto Pinochet, is too ill to stand charges of human rights violations. Another appeals court decided, probably using a second medical opinion or, judging by the nature of the charges, thinking of their wallets, that Pinochet could face charges of tax evasion on over $17 million held in foreign bank accounts.

Much the same as in the US, I suppose. Nowadays you can use marijuana as a medicine in several states; I have heard it provides a better form of pain relief than most high-priced medicines on the market. Once you've used marijuana to relieve your pain you will obviously be fit and well enough to stand trial for possession of illegal drugs. What may be allowed within one state, according to a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, is still open to prosecution by the federal authorities.

And what is it with another health related matter before the courts in the US? Wasn't the Justice Department supposed to be seeking $130 billion in damages following accusations of a conspiracy by the tobacco companies to create more smoking addicts? So, where did this final demand of only $10 billion come from? It couldn't be that there was a behind the scenes deal, or that the tobacco lobby has strong-armed anyone, could it? Certainly not, that would be a conspiracy in itself.

Yes, many states seem to be doing away with medical uses of marijuana. Outlawing this totally natural way of easing the pain of many people for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies. Sad.

I have the impression, man4nooners1 that the states are accepting the need for medical relief through marijuana, but it is the federal government - detached from the realities of medical problems - who are playing the bad guy here.
