Civil union or marriage?

Here's a shortened version of a question that i6u9we69allnight posted in her Blog for you to consider - or, just as good, go to her Blog, see the full point and answer it there - and perhaps comment on.

Do you believe that there is a future for same sex marriages?

My own comment in i6u9we69allnight's Blog was that marriage is a religious institution and that civil unions should be the order of the day, also for same sex partnerships, as a civil contract with the same restraints and benefits for all regardless of their standing or gender. Marriage should be confined to the religious institutions acording to their rules or traditions and available to those who wish to confine themselves to a stricter 'until death do us part' form of contract.

Now I find it amazing that more and more male and female couples are not getting married these days. Alot have no desire to form that contract. And most gay couples wish they could have one.
I am for same sex marriage. People are people. They have their own right to choose what sexuality they want. If a gay couple spends their entire lives together, buying a home both building a life together both fiscal and emotional, I don't feel that the goverment has the rights to disallow a life partner from being able to recieve what he or she has helped to build. The goverment has no rights to step into the lives of their people so personally. People have the right to live they life they want and choose. Though I myself am not gay, I am for gay marriage.

Live and let live, if they want to marry thats fine with me. Personally I dont believe a piece of paper adds anything to my (18 yrs)relationship. But then again I am not religeous...
