The Perfect Wave

I stood there on the beach, watching the wave.
Board in hand,
Feeling the rhythm
Not really having been tossed before,
But always knowing the reality

There is opportunity to be thrown,
To wind up eating sand
My confidence soars
My wetsuit left in the car
The water feels tepid at worst

Where I have failed so many times,
The wave catches me and takes me.
It is so smooth, so full of potential
I have no choice but to follow it to the end

Ahead to the south the beach ends
The head protrudes
Rocks are displayed in sinister fashion
I am on the best ride in years
I reason

I will let the wave take me where it may
My balance is so good
I couldn’t falter if I wanted
I can handle this

The wave delivers me
To the rocks
I am knocked into the water
Battered and bruised but still able to stand
The water suddenly feels cold
The beach, my vehicle so far away

Why couldn’t I abort the wave?
Why did I have to ride it right to the end
Where it delivered me
And not I in control
I am feeling cold

I will see you when I reach my vehicle.

It sounds like real allow it to take you as far then sometimes it leaves you battered and bruised but nevertheless wise and alive.
