“The word ‘politics’ is derived from the word ‘poiy,’ meaning ‘many,’ and the word ‘ticks,’ meaning ‘blood sucking parasites.”
-- Dave Barry
I love this quote. The funny thing about this quote is the griping. It seems to me people love to cry about politicians. To me this is a useless endeavor. Politicians are supposed to be our representatives, the soldiers on our side to go against others on a different side, or the state itself. To say they suck means we are doing something wrong. Where did these people come from? They didn’t come from planet politician; they came from American homes in American towns, and ate with American families. Not every one of them came from a rich home, in fact many worked their way up and were actually born in slums.
So let’s look at why they suck. Is it the system? How about their family life? Well the system could definitely be part of it, but it’s no different than going to an office job and deciding whether to order Swing line or Generic brand. It’s all about decisions. Now, is it their family life? Well, maybe, but if they came from American homes and American families why should they be much different than us. You can’t tell me every family but mine raises money grubbing, backstabbing wimps. So where does this leave us? All I can think is it has to be the power. Power can turn good wholesome people into tricky, deceitful, minions. I could accept this; but what if it’s not the power but the money that accompanies it. Which is worse? Usually the two travel hand in hand, but with politics that is not necessarily so. Many people can gain support to be elected and then have the power. This power allows them to gain money by giving up goodness, which in turn, makes a dirty, rich, politician. Does this always happen? No, but there are enough poor politicians the odds support my proposal.
