Halloween Fact of the Day #4

According to legend, Jack carried the piece of coal that the Devil gave him in a hollowed out turnip.

The Irish hollowed out turnips and put a light in them in the hopes to keep Jack and other spirits away from their home.

When Irish immigrants came to North America, they brought the tradition back with them. They saw that turnips weren’t as plentiful as pumpkins so they switch vegetables. They were also known to have used turnips, potatoes, and rutabagas.

Does it work? Will the spirits stay away? Also, do you know the best way to draw spirits such as Jack toward your home? I need to talk to them.

Last I heard, Jack had a weekly poker game with Santa Claus, the Tooth Fair, and the Easter Bunny. You might want to try setting out a table of finger foods. Rumor has it he likes Colcannon and some other traditional Irish foods. Try that, Keith.
