A Simple Challenge

I am not an egotistical person and very rarely do I toot my own horn however, I do delight in the fact that I seem to be more conscious of the beauty that surrounds us. I don’t mean people nor animals…I mean the simplistic beauty that surrounds us everyday.

Today, the few people I work with were talking about what makes them happy; what picks them up when they are feeling down. I just sat and listened. I found it to be a somber conversation…and I was disheartened with what gives them instant gratification. The list being formulated was the same list you hear over and over again and it all revolves around money…new clothes, new jewelry, going on vacation, going to the hairdresser, playing golf, and the list went on and on. Silently I sat there; half-listening; making my own list in my mind.

I must have been daydreaming because I felt a tap on my shoulder and one of the attorney’s I work for said, “What can brings a smile to your face when things are down?” All I could say was, “The little things.” Of course, that wasn’t a satisfactory answer, especially in a law firm, so they kept hounding me. There were five of us sitting around the conference room table eating lunch and I thought…okay, they want to know.

I asked them to close their eyes and to answer the questions I was about to ask…

1. Describe the bark on a white birch tree…

2. What color is the center of Queen Ann’s Lace generally? For those of you that don’t know, it is a wildflower here in New England.

3. How does a fern develop…no; not how does it grow…but how does it evolve?

4. What does rain smell like?

5. Can you visual a leaf floating down a stream and if so what does it look like?

6. Have you ever watched a spider spin its web?

7. Describe a waterfall…what does it sound like?

8. What does a Robin sound like?

9. Describe a garden snake, what do they feel like?

10. Describe what a maple leaf looks like…not just the color…what does it look like.

There was complete silence…not one of them had opened there eyes and yet not one had answered. Quietly I said, “Those are the types of things that can bring a smile to my face when things are down. I looked at them for a moment and I knew then and there that they had no clue what I meant; so I excused myself and went back to my desk.

A couple of hours passed and the attorney that had asked me the original question came over to me and asked, “Can you describe the bark on a white birch tree?” I smiled and said, “I can do one better!” I grabbed a pencil and piece of paper and drew him a picture of a white birch. He stood there for a moment and looked at it…he then looked me in the eyes and all he said was, “Incredible”. He looked back down at the picture and seemed to be lost in thought as a client came in that I was meeting with. After the meeting I went back to my desk and noticed the picture was gone…didn’t think too much about it at the time.

A little while later I heard this same attorney saying goodbye to everyone…I was the last stop on his way out the door. His eyes were twinkling like I had never seen before and he stood there for a moment. He blushed slightly and said, “The color in the center of Queen Ann’s Lace is generally deep purple”. Needless to say, I was quite surprised. He started to walk away but he hesitated as he neared the door. Without even turning around he said, “I walked out back today where I know they grow and I looked…thank you!”

So my friends, my little challenge to you is…can you answer the questions? Close your eyes…visual the things you see everyday…see the beauty that is there in front of you each and moment…

I bet your smiling!

May each of you have a beautiful and safe holiday weekend! Oh and by the way, ~hugs~ to you all!

Hi dreamy,
Although I haven't met you face to face yet, I think that you're a wonderful human being that I just adore. What you just described is an example of why I feel this way.

It is rather unfortunate that in general, the majority of the populous is content with the fast pace of the "now" which generally appeases the false sense of satisfaction. For those who take just a brief(surentipious) moment, an opportunity, to seize the beauty surrounding their being.. truely "priceless" and is imprinted in the memory bank, as a soothing agent for use when prescribed by "self".
In answer to one posed question..I have observed a spider(s)(you don't like heights..I don't like spiders..) spin its web and it is a magnificent event and undertaking..intricate,pure, in it's own individual design(like a fingerprint)which is to "trap" and in effect it worked as I was pleasantly trapped for quite a period of time watching and wondering.. with awe. Very relaxing(natural-ly).
Some of the most beautiful and most effective "relievers" in life are usually right in front of us..take a moment" smell the roses" and with that breath ease on down the road..with a smile on your face and a tingling revigorated sense of calm in your spirit and being..
Butterflies, are, in my opinion.. the most beautiful "free" spirits perhaps in all of nature, but I will continue to seek and venture..
I remain..searching..and
Have a greatand safe holiday w/e..xxoo

He will never look at you the same ... you gave him a gift, and he found you to be a woman of substance ... and he will not forget that.

I work in a family law and am often so surrounded by some of the most wretched stories I've ever come across ... and yes, it is the simple things that bring me joy ... more so now than ever.

There was in my garden what appeared to be the most wretched, monstrous growth of weeds I'd ever seen. Each stalk at least two inches around, and each grew to be about three feet tall. Leaves apparently ample food for garden insects. Each morning when I left for work, I would look at it and tell me myself that I really had to dig that thing out and get rid of it, and each night I'd promise to get around to it tomorrow. One morning, coming down my steps, I looked again at this garden and found that each stalk had given way to the most majestic blossom of brilliant deep ruby red flowers, each bloom at least seven inches across ...

Your post reminded me of my garden. Thank you for this simple gift today.

Joyfully... all except the ones about the fern and the flower (which I just don't know what it looks like by name)... I can vividly describe with my eyes closed. A very nice post... and yes, most of us, most of the time miss out on the simple beauty that surrounds us. Some of these things are absolutely amazing... and there are so many many more.

mysticdreamangel replies on 9/5/2006 5:20 am:

Yes, there are so many more...and I knew you would be one that could describe each one. I am quite sure that if you saw the fern and the flower you would be able to describe those two as well.
